BMW M3 E30 Roberto Ravaglia / Cecotto (1989) – 42,100 mls – 1 of 16 1989

General description : In order to celebrate the many competition victories of factory drivers Johnny Cecotto and Roberto Ravaglia, BMW produced two special versions of the E30 M3 during 1989 that were named in their honour. These models introduced the 215hp version of the catalyst-equipped 2.3-litre S14 engine, still rated at 170 lb/ft of torque (though now peaking at a slightly lower 4,600rpm). This engine, which would become standardised on European-spec M3s beginning in September of 1989, can be identified in the Ravaglia/Cecotto by the body-coloured valve cover and plenum chamber.Instead of the E30 M3 Johnny Cecotto edition, the UK market received only the Roberto Ravaglia edition, which was essentially an identical car except for the signature of a different BMW factory race driver on the numbered plaque. A total of just 25 examples were produced, 16 in Misano Red (236) and 9 in Nogaro Silver metallic (243).The Ravaglia featured the front and rear spoilers of the Evo II and was further distinguished by its thinner rear window glass and 16-inch alloy wheels with unique black centres. On the inside, the standard sport seats were trimmed in a special Anthracite or Silver M-Technic cloth with Bison leather bolsters. Additional special features included door sill plates with a colour ‘M3’ insignia, an M footrest for the driver, and a plaque on the centre console that displayed the signature of Roberto Ravaglia. The cars were further equipped with a green-tinted windshield stripe, electric windows, internal headlight aim adjustment, on-board computer II, and cassette storage box.EQUIPMENT Misano Red paintwork, Anthracite M-Technic cloth with black Bison leather bolsters, Roberto Ravaglia Numbered plaque (No. 061 of 505 Cecotto/Ragalia editions), 16-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels with black centres, Evolution II front chin spoiler, Evolution II rear lip spoiler, M door sill plates, M driver footrest, Electric windows, On-board computer II, Pioneer KEX-M800 cassette radio, Pioneer CD changer (not fitted), Cassette storage, Front fog lights, BMW Fire extinguisher, Alloy spare wheel, BMW toolkit, BMW first aid kit, Warning triangle, Car cover.ENGINE & TRANSMISSION The E30 M3’s S14 engine was designed for racing applications and was, therefore, compact and high-revving. Special features included individual throttle plates for each cylinder, machined intake and exhaust ports, and a crankshaft with eight counterweights. The Ravaglia edition’s catalyst-equipped S14 produced 215hp at 6,750rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,600rpm.As to be expected the engine bay is exceptionally clean throughout. Everything appears really fresh with no signs of any corrosion, damage or previous poor repair. Both the plenum chamber and valve cover are still wearing their factory Misano Red paint, and traces of original protective wax can also be found on a number of components. All in all, a real treat for the enthusiast.HISTORY FILE This rare M3 Roberto Ravaglia was first registered in August 1989. Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
