Buick Skylark 350 cubic inch V8 1970

General description : Clean, solid Skylark with lots of recent work. Great-running 350, nicely preserved original interior, recent paint. New tires, gas tank, radiator, and much more. Drives very well with no issues. Really nice A-body at a great price!

For some reason, the Buick (and Oldsmobile) versions of the GM A-body just don’t get the same respect as the Chevelles and GTOs. On the one hand, that’s kind of a shame, but on the other, it means you can get a great Buick with the great A-body DNA for a fraction of the price. And we have to admit, the Buicks just seem to drive better—they’re somehow more solid-feeling than their corporate cousins. Either way, this pretty red 1970 Buick Skylark represents a lot of fun for the money. It also has a lot of recent work, not the least of which is a full paint job completed in spring 2022 (with photos) that looks great. It’s not a show car, but it has won a few awards at local shows, and that’s where this car works best: get in, turn the key, and go have fun with your friends. The car was originally code 63, Desert Gold, so the respray gave it a whole new outlook in code 75 Fire Red—it’s correct for 1970. We have to admit it’s a big improvement, and the sheetmetal underneath appears to have been in good order before they started shooting color. Experts will note the 1972 Skylark grille and headlights, but since things didn’t change very much from year to year, it’s a nearly invisible change. The rest is stock and we like the clean, unadorned flanks of the Skylark that show off the handsome shape to good effect. There’s also nice chrome on the bumpers, new weather seals, and correct anodized rocker trim to add some contrast.

The code 124 Sandalwood interior appears to be largely original and in very good condition. The bench seat makes plenty of room inside and the basic Skylark goodness means it’s comfortable for everyone. This car isn’t loaded up with features, but the basics are quite good: the dash pad isn’t cracked by the sun, the carpets are new, there are auxiliary gauges under the dash, and the RetroSound radio was recently installed so it’s ready to cruise. There aren’t a lot of options, but the car does have the interesting GM rear defroster unit in the trunk, which is little more than a fan that blows interior air on the rear window. The original headliner is in good condition with only some light discoloration around the rear window (more visible in our photos than in real life) and all the seat belts are still flexible and supple. There’s also a large trunk with a correct mat and full-sized spare with jack assembly.

Buick’s 350 cubic inch V8 shares nothing with its corporate siblings of similar size, and that’s why it has its own unique personality. It’s smooth and torquey, more luxury than muscle, and maybe that’s an explanation for why the Buicks just feel different. This one runs great and has a lot of recent work, including a rebuilt carburetor, new fuel pump, fresh alternator, and a full tune-up with plugs, cap, rotor, and wires. Up front there’s a new aluminum radiator, and it’s dressed in correct Dante Red engine enamel with some chrome dress up to make it look its best. It starts easily and idles nicely, and out on the road it has a generous torque curve that makes it feel energetic without being high-strung. Small block Buicks were backed by the reliable TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, and with 2.73 gears out back, this is an easy highway cruiser that’s ready for a road trip. You’ll note fresh tubular A-arms up front, along with new springs and shocks, along with details like bushings, end links, and a new pitman arm. The Flowmaster dual exhaust system has an appropriately mellow tone that’s just right for the sporty Skylark and might even add a few horsepower, too. Floors and rockers are in good order. Other new equipment includes rear shocks and springs and a new gas tank out back, so it’s ready to run. Buick Road Wheels are always a great choice on cars of the period, and these are wearing four recent 225/60/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials.

Extras include the original owner’s manual, some advertising brochures, original air cleaner assembly and AM radio, a new water pump, and some restoration photos.

We think this is a lot of car for the money. It’s handsome, clean, solid, and fun to drive, and still costs thousands less than a comparable Chevelle. All the recent work adds up to a significant portion of the asking price, so all that’s left for you to do is get in and start having fun. Call today!

About Buick
Buick, today an American automobile division of the American manufacturer General Motors (GM), was founded in 1899 as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company, making it the oldest car make in the US.

To us, the most memorable models in Buick's line up have to be the late 40's Roadmasters and 60's stylish Rivieras with strong Italian influences.
