Chevrolet 3100 383 cubic inch V8 1957

Sometimes a vehicle comes in that checks all the right boxes. You know, all the features you’d want if you were building it yourself. So with that in mind, have a look at this beautiful 1957 Chevrolet 3100 “big window” pickup, which does indeed check all the boxes. It’s been tastefully and professionally upgraded under the skin, but retains that traditional ‘50s look that makes these trucks so appealing. The all-new design coincided with the introduction of Chevy’s legendary small block V8, and these trucks definitely have a great look—the forward-slanted design makes it look like it’s in motion even when standing still. And to cover it in Hugger Orange only draws attention to just how great it looks. There’s super straight bodywork that fits together quite well, and the details stand out when you take a closer look. The hood ornament has been shaved, but most of the other trim remains in place, including the cool badges on the front fenders. There’s also a little “V” underneath, signifying that there’s a V8 living under the hood. Then there’s the crease that runs from the headlights to the back of the cab, and is picked up in the rear fenders, highlighted here with a black pinstripe. There’s nice chrome and trim, and the bed has been refinished with oak slats and stainless rub strips for a highly detailed look.

The two-tone orange and tan interior works quite well with the Hugger Orange bodywork, and it’s a lot more comfortable than basic black might have been. A modern bench seat is a bit more comfortable and forgiving than the original, but it keeps the vintage pickup truck vibe that makes these trucks so popular. Matching carpets are a nice improvement over the original rubber mat, and lots of insulation keeps it comfortable and quiet inside. A three-spoke wood wheel hangs on a custom tilt steering column and the Dakota Digital gauges are an ultra-trick take on the originals—check out the display screen that emulates a rolling odometer! All the secondary controls are factory-issue with modern controls behind them. The original radio knobs handle a modern AM/FM/iPod unit that slots right into the original space, and the Vintage Air sliders look OEM. Even the long Lokar shifter almost looks like it was born there. That little toggle switch by the headlights controls the electronic exhaust cut-outs, so you can really make this truck rumble if you want. Someone put a lot of thought into this build.

The engine is a 383 cubic inch stroker V8, which fits like a small block but makes torque like a big block. That means it’s an easy fit in the 3100’s engine bay and it offers the usual hardware: 4-barrel carburetor, ceramic-coated headers, electronic ignition, and a big aluminum radiator. Other thoughtful upgrades include a serpentine belt drive for the accessories, a few chrome and polished aluminum tidbits to make it look great, and neatly organized wiring. It starts easily, idles nicely, and definitely pulls the truck around with enthusiasm. Backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic with overdrive, it’s an easy cruiser that just loafs along at modern highway speeds, even with 3.55 gears in the 10-bolt rear end. The front suspension is a custom crossmember with upper and lower A-arms and coil-over shocks, along with power rack-and-pinion steering, so this truck feels more like a car. Out back you get a 4-link with coil-over shocks, which is a traditional choice that’s easy to live with. There’s a disc brake at all four corners, another nice upgrade that often gets overlooked, and a fresh stainless gas tank hangs under the bed—much safer than behind the front seat! The cab corners and rockers are solid with no signs of patching, and man, does that exhaust system sound great! The stance is just right (although with coil-overs, it’s completely adjustable) and it sits on 15-inch Rally wheels with staggered 235/70/15 front and 275/60/15 rear performance radials.

Documentation includes a HUGE folder with manuals and receipts, a few spare parts, and some matching Hugger Orange paint for future touch-ups.
