The practical muscle car? The truck that hauls more than cargo? It's hard to describe the El Camino, but this 1978 example is an excellent example of one of Chevy's better ideas. Nicely preserved and sporting a factory 4-speed manual transmission, it's a future collectable that you can enjoy right now.
Finished in appealing blue and silver paint, this El Camino has apparently never worked a day in its life, instead being treated as a cool daily driver and later a collector piece by only a handful of dedicated owners. The paint job is fairly recent and looks good, but it's clear that the bodywork was in good order before any of the work began. The chiseled flanks of the late Elkys neatly balanced the need to carry cargo and still maintain car-like proportions, and few will argue that the chin spoiler and hood scoop on this one doesn't make a great-looking truck. As the photos will attest, the bodywork is straight, the paint buffed to a high shine, and aside from some shaved badges, the overall stock appearance was maintained. Even the bed is neatly refinished, and the lack of any serious scuffs or dents suggest that it has probably been used as the world's biggest trunk rather than a cargo bay, especially with the flush-fitting tonneau cover.
Thanks to a pair of unusual bucket seats, the interior looks sporty and inviting. Items like the door panels and dash appear to be original, as are the seats, which is really remarkable after nearly 40 years. The carpets are probably new, because they're just too nice to be original, and they're protected by heavy-duty rubber floor mats. The original gauges are in decent shape, and they're joined by the usual tachometer on the side of the instrument panel and a set of auxiliary duals underneath. Perhaps most significantly, there's a center console and a 4-speed manual transmission, making this one entertaining El Camino to drive. In addition, this Elky also offers goodies like A/C, a custom steering wheel, remote mirrors, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo, so it's ready for a cross-country jaunt. No matter where you go, Home Depot or the local cruise night, you're sure to get admiring glances and positive comments.
The engine is a 305 cubic inch V8 that makes all the right sounds thanks to a new Flowmaster dual exhaust system. With a great muscle car feel, the engine delivers a reasonable dose of low-end torque befitting a truck, but cruises at high speeds without complaint. The engine bay is tidy and nicely maintained, but still very original, with evidence of the original engine enamel still clinging to the block, and a chrome air cleaner up top. Routine maintenance has kept it in top operating condition, and clean living certainly doesn't hurt. Just in case you still want to use it as a truck, air shocks in back help keep the body level. Handsome Rally wheels are always the right choice, and wear 225/70/15 white letter radials all around.
