DKW AU 1000 DKW 1000 SP Roadster Fully restored and revised, only 1.640 made 1961

General description : We rarely see them, especially in this condition. The Auto Union 1000SP Roadster used to be seen as the Ford Thunderbirds little brother. You can quite understand the comparison when you see them side by side. The Auto Union 1000SP Roadster used to be as expensive as the coupé version. Sales of the coupé amounted to 5,004 whilst the Roadster only clocked up 1,640 sales. In today's market that means the Roadster is worth a lot more than the closed version. Despite its modest size Auto Union marketed the 1000SP Roadster as a proper luxury product. That also still happens to be the strategy of her successor, Audi. The Auto Union 1000SP was also the last Auto Union powered by a 3 cylinder 2-stroke engine. All subsequent models were fitted with 4-stroke engines. The car has recently undergone a full Nut & Bolt restoration. The work is of an exceptionally high level, the quality of which just jumps out at you. Underneath the car is as beautiful as on top. There is all new wonderfully gleaming brightwork. The bodywork looks great and has nice and thin, original and correctly aligned panelwork. The car has also been fitted with two extra spotlights. During the restoration, the bodywork was fully resprayed in Gun Metal Grey. No restoration is complete without a new hood and that is the reason we see the lovely black pristine hood, providing a secure cover when needed. For those days you want to drive around exposed to nothing but the air around you there is a. red tonneau cover for you to use, matching the red leather upholstery. It is evident the car has been completely reupholstered with a keen eye to detail and authenticity. The Auto Union 1000SP Roadster is not just a pretty face and a joy to behold especially in this particular finish, it also has the road manners to go with its sporty appearance. Both engine and transmission were fully rebuilt and now function perfectly. Driving is therefore a feast. It starts the moment you turn the key. The engine produces that typical 2-stroke sound, immediately telling you to have something special under the bonnet. The gear change is smooth and precise. The engine produces 55 Ps at 4,500 revs, enough to propel the 1000SP Roadster to a top speed of 140km/hr. Whilst you can effortlessly keep up with modern traffic, the motorway is not the real domain of the Auto Union 1000SP Roadster. Motoring over B-roads whilst enjoying an engine that will never come back again, is where the Auto Union 1000SP Roadster comes into its own. This is a wonderful and rare, fully restored and mechanically rebuilt Auto Union 1000SP Roadster in prime condition. Gallery Aaldering is Europe’s leading Classic Cars specialist since 1975! About DKW
Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round for a story that's as American as apple pie but set in the heart of Germany. We're diving into the history of DKW, the German car and motorbike manufacturer that was like a hidden gem in the automotive world.

Now, let's set the stage. It's the mid-20th century, and the automotive landscape is dominated by names like Ford and Chevrolet. But here's where DKW comes in, ready to take on the competition like an underdog with a heart of gold.

DKW was known for their innovative spirit, and when they introduced the DKW F1, they turned the automotive world on its head. While everyone else was peddling rear-wheel-drive cars, DKW said, "Why not put the engine up front, where it belongs?" It was like they threw a curveball right at the big American car manufacturers.

The DKW F1 was nimble, efficient, and affordable, a David amongst the Goliaths. It handled like a breeze, making the VW Beetle, a tough competitor, look like a lumbering giant in comparison. It was as if DKW brought a slingshot to the battle, and boy, did it work.

But here's the real star of the DKW show - the Schnellaster. This commercial van was ahead of its time, with front-wheel drive that made it a game-changer. While the VW Beetle was making waves as a people's car, the Schnellaster was the unsung hero, the guiding star for every front-wheel-drive commercial van we see on the road today.

The Schnellaster was the workhorse that could haul a load with the grace of an American cowboy. Its two-stroke engine had the heart of a true Texan - reliable, strong, and a touch of rugged charm. It could carry goods with the same ease as an American pickup truck, and that's saying something.

So, when you see a modern FWD commercial van effortlessly weaving through the city streets, remember the unsung hero, the Schnellaster, the van that set the stage for all the others. DKW may not have had the fame of some other automakers, but they sure left their mark on the world of automobiles.

In a land of automotive giants, DKW was the plucky underdog that showed the world a thing or two about innovation and practicality. And that, my friends, is a tale worthy of a big American smile and a nod of respect.
