GMC Caballero 305 HO 1984

General description : GMC'S VERSION OF THE EL CAMINO, BUILT 311CI SMALL BLOCK, 700R4 TRANS, SWEET RIDE

As you've guessed, the Caballero was GMC's version of the venerable El Camino, although this particular 1985 GMC Caballero is far from ordinary. With an over-built small block, gorgeous custom paint, and plenty of upgrades, it's one of the best we've ever seen.
The first thing you notice is that incredible custom paint job, and it's every bit as impressive as you think. The subtle combination is accentuated by orange highlights and expert pinstripe work to make this hauler look like a first-class show piece. A cowl induction hood is a traditional GM performance look and it seems right at home on this Caballero, which has a familiar but slightly different look. It was finished a few years ago, but the quality work means that it's holding up extremely well with only minor signs of use. No worries, though, because showing up in this truck/car means you get all the attention. Aside from that hood, the bodywork remains completely stock, and that frenched license plate frame was original equipment; pretty cool, right? You also get a beautifully finished bed that doesn't look like it ever had to work very hard as well as traditional touches like chrome bumpers, a billet grille, blue dot taillights, and a pair of shiny exhaust pipes peeking out from underneath.
The custom leather interior reflects the exterior color combination with tan seats and purple carpets, and the look is extremely attractive. Orange piping ties it all together. The door panels look fairly stock and this Caballero comes fully loaded with options like power windows and locks, A/C, and a tilt steering column, although the power locks are not working at the moment. The original gauges are joined by a big Autogauge tachometer and shift light on the steering column and a pair of auxiliary gauges under the dash, both of which add a sporty look to the Cab's interior. The original gauges are in fair condition and it still sports the original AM/FM/cassette stereo that was installed back in 1984. The original shifter is gone, replaced by a B&M unit that looks and feels vastly superior and manages a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, so the Caballero is a great highway cruiser, too.
Mechanically, this Caballero originally carried a wheezing 305 cubic inch V8, but today there's a 311 cubic inch engine that was built to be entertaining. The internals were balanced and blueprinted, the heads were ported, there's a big camshaft inside, plus an Edelbrock intake and carburetor up top, and it all adds up to 358 horsepower, about twice the original figure. Aside from some chrome and polished aluminum bits, the engine bay looks pretty stock, but that also means it's easy to service and maintain. The aforementioned 700R4 is from a 1985 Corvette and spins a set of 4.10 gears on an Auburn Posi, but with the deep overdrive, it's still comfortable on the highway. Long-tube headers feed a custom exhaust system that sounds throaty without getting annoying on long drives and the underside is clean but not over-detailed, so you can still drive this car without worries. Vintage-looking polished American Racing wheels are a surprisingly apt choice on this custom hauler and are wrapped with 255/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear BFGoodrich radials.
Unusual, beautifully built, and plenty fast, this GMC is a standout in our showroom and could be a standout at the next show you attend. Call today!

About GMC
Did you ever mistake a Chevy pick up for GMC? No wonder as those have been virtually identical apart from the grill and logo since the 20's.
The difference is Chevrolet trucks were marketed towards private users, while GMC was intended for commercial use, so it's more about market segmentation than anything else.
