General History

First developed and delivered in 1999 the AP1 S2000 was a breakthrough Honda product offering, delivering a highly capable sports car package, clean design, and VTEC twin cam power paired with a stellar design and award-winning Honda reliability. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Honda deployed the latest in technology including manufacturing developments using precision-tooled alloy body panels with an X-bone frame section that improved structural rigidity and collision safety. The front engine/rear drive layout achieved amazing performance due to the 240hp engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and incomparable suspension and steering. For 2000, the inaugural model year, just 1,350 were made in the triple black combination.

General Overview

This example was purchased by the current and consigning owner from the first owner, the Honda selling dealership. Purchased in January 2000 with 121 miles, with dealer-installed ground effects package (front lip and side strakes) and alarm, the owner has been meticulous in his care and maintenance including interval services at the Honda dealership and annual oil changes by the owner using a convenient Fumoto oil drain valve. Service and parts invoices accompanying the car indicate all fluids (transmission, clutch, differential, brake, and coolant), including heater and radiator hoses, thermostat, have been changed as the owner carefully accrued just over 9,000 miles under his near 25 years of ownership. Other services include recently changed cabin and engine air filters and installed set of Michelin Super Sport 215/45 ZR17 front and 245/40 ZR17 rear tires (approximately 1,000 miles ago) which are mounted on a set of 2008 Honda S2000 CR 17” wheels with black center caps and black lug nuts. The original spare wheels with tires are included with tire bags for each wheel.

Enthusiasts familiar with the Honda S2000 will note that the VTEC engine utilizes a steel timing chain which, unlike a synthetic timing belt, does not need to be changed, only adjusted. The timing chain is recommended to be changed at 100k miles with no duration requirement for replacement providing oil changes have been regularly performed as they have with this example. Also of note, this car retains all 10 factory VIN stickers adhered to each of the major body panels indicating the original factory body panels remain on the car today. The owner reports that all Honda recalls have been performed including the seat belts, tonneau cover, spark plugs, and tail light replacements.

General Condition

Today with just over 9,000 original miles indicated, the current owner reports that this Honda has always been garaged, covered with an OEM car cover (included with the car), and never used on a racetrack or in a competition setting. The factory black paint has been metered with a digital paint meter returning low single digit numbers indicative of original paint. The paint is smooth throughout and retains a consistent high gloss with mirror-like reflections. The exterior has been upgraded with a set of 2008 Honda 17” wheels with Michelin tires, black chrome Honda emblems, the grille has a removable screen mesh installed (to prevent excessive bug intrusion), color-matched keyhole plugs, and a convex driver’s side mirror panel has been installed. The bumpers, lighting, lenses, side view mirrors, and body trim are in excellent condition overall, consistent with the low miles indicated on the six-digit digital odometer. The body panel gaps are consistent showing good closures and tight fit for the doors, hood, and trunk. The glass is in excellent condition with OEM brand etching consistent with original factory installation. Both windows go up and down smoothly as does the convertible top, which is original to the car displaying remarkably new condition for the top itself and the crystal-clear plastic rear window.

The interior is essentially as new with rich, supple factory black leather trimmed bucket seats original to the car, matching to the center console and door panels. The overall interior presents like new with all interior surfaces clean, smooth, and supple to the touch. The door panels are in excellent condition with no scuffs or scratches as often seen due to seatbelt contact. Seat stitching and bolsters are also in exemplary condition. The dashboard is smooth to the touch and features a clean, detailed instrument binnacle with excellent color and contrast, and no fogging to the clear plastic instrument cover. The black dash padding is in excellent condition with no cracks or sun fading. The radio, air conditioning, and heater all function as expected.

Owner enhancements to the interior include a titanium shift knob, 2002 S2000 alloy dead pedal, LED light bulbs for the interior and trunk, Hendy floor mats, clear protective film for the driver’s side threshold, Alpine speaker upgrades (SPS1629 for the doors and SPS1029 behind the seats), Lucid B harness allowing a 4-speaker mute feature, glove box organizer, a leather shifter boot, leather console cover, and a full height S2000 etched rear windscreen. The trunk is in excellent condition and houses a space saver spare tire and a set of tools that also appear essentially new.

Under the hood, the engine bay delivers correct finishes reflective of original specifications and exceptional detailing. Always garaged and properly serviced, all components are of original specification and in operational condition featuring an upgraded AUT Design carbon fiber cooling plate. The undercarriage is representative of an unrestored example consistent with low miles and temperate California climate use. Selected metal suspension components display excellent finishes throughout, the exhaust is in excellent condition, and there is no visual evidence of structural compromise to any of the underbody chassis or rocker panels, and no structural corrosion visible to any of the components.

The car starts, stops, runs, and drives like a brand-new car. The gearbox is excellent with no synchro issues and smooth operation, the clutch takes smoothly on a tall pedal and the disc brakes bring the car down smoothly and evenly from highway speeds. Acceleration is fantastic, offering ear to ear grins either casually cruising or gracefully exiting a sweeping apex especially with the top down. Despite a near quarter century since launch, the S2000 continues to impress as one of the most compelling sports cars ever built. This is a fantastic S2000 with clean title, clean Carfax, and recent CA smog certificate offered from a meticulous and dedicated S2000 enthusiast. Finished in desirable triple black and boasting low original miles, this Honda S2000 is ready for the next enthusiast to take the wheel, lower the top, and enjoy with confidence.

About Honda
Today, we embark on a journey through the annals of automotive history, specifically the tale of Honda cars up to the end of the 1980s. It's a story of a company with an unwavering commitment to engineering excellence and an unassuming dedication to making motoring better.

Our journey begins with the Honda N360, a petite kei car that captured the essence of post-war Japan. It was tiny, simple, and perfect for navigating crowded city streets. Honda's first foray into the car world was unassuming, but it showed their dedication to practical, efficient transportation.

Next, we meet the Honda Civic, a car that needs no introduction. It arrived on the scene in the early '70s and set the tone for the decades to come. The Civic was compact, reliable, and efficient, a car that quietly won the hearts of drivers around the world.

Moving on to the Honda Accord, a model that embraced the virtues of practicality and reliability. It was a family car that you could count on. It didn't make a fuss; it simply got the job done.

Now, let's talk about the Honda CVCC, a car that addressed the environmental concerns of the 1970s. It introduced the CVCC engine, a groundbreaking technology that reduced emissions and paved the way for cleaner, more fuel-efficient engines.

The '80s ushered in the Honda Prelude, a sporty coupe that embodied the spirit of the era. It was a car that dared to be a bit different, a bit more stylish. The Prelude was a glimpse into Honda's ability to blend practicality with a touch of sportiness.

And of course, there's the Honda CRX, a compact and agile hatchback that enthusiasts loved. It was a car that put the 'fun' in 'functional.' With its lightweight design and peppy engines, it was a hoot to drive.

Lastly, we arrive at the Honda NSX, a supercar that changed the game. It was Honda's way of saying, 'We can do extraordinary too.' The NSX was a marvel of engineering, a mid-engine masterpiece that challenged the likes of Ferrari.

So, there you have it, the story of Honda up to the end of the 1980s. It's a story of cars that didn't shout or boast but quietly went about their business, providing efficient, reliable, and well-engineered solutions for everyday life.

And as we contemplate these humble yet innovative vehicles, we're reminded that sometimes, it's the understated, well-crafted things that leave the most lasting impressions. Quite splendid, really.
