This example was made at American Motors’ Toledo, Ohio assembly plant.Rugged toughness and power are the defining characteristics of the 1985 Jeep Wagoneer.
This Grand Wagoneer’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order, however there are some minor blemishes upon close inspection. The faux woodgrain appliqués on the doors and fenders are in overall very good order.
The Wagoneer’s windows are clear and intact but there are some minor chips visible in the windshield. The truck’s lights are in overall very good order; however the driver’s side fog light lens is cracked.
This SUV’s bodywork is solid and straight, the shiny chrome bumpers fit well to the body, the engine bay is tidy and the battery looks very good. In the rear, the cargo area looks very good,
This truck rolls on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A light truck tires, size 30X9.50R15 at all four corners. Each tire surrounds a factory aluminum wheel with a center cap.
Under that hood is a 360 CID V-8 engine; the 360 was the last AMC V-8 to be manufactured. It is buttoned to a General Motors-supplied Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, the original Honey-colored interior is in overall very good order. The leather bucket seats and rear bench seat are swathed in Honey Leather and look fantastic. The matching honey-hued carpet is in good condition in front, the original carpet is presentable while the headliner is in very good condition, as is the three-spoke steering wheel, complete with faux wood-grain hub. The instrument panel is in good shape while the inner door panels are in very good condition. Rounding out the interior is a Sony AM/FM stereo with CD player.
Compared with offerings fromGM,Ford,International Harvester andLand Rover€” which were producing utilitarian work-oriented vehicles with spartan truck-like interiors €” the Wagoneer’s luxury set it apart. Together with theGladiator Truck, the revolutionary WagoneerSJ platformsported an advancedoverhead camstraight-six engine and offered features unheard of at the time in any other mainstream 4WD vehicle, such asindependent front suspensionpower steering, automatic transmission,a factory radio or air-conditioning.
The Wagoneer made its debut seven years before Land Rover launched itsRange Rover in Great Britain and 24 years before that upscale marque appeared in the US.
For 1984, AMC replaced the SJ-body Cherokee with the all-new, smaller and more fuel-efficientunibodyJeep Cherokee (XJ) but high demand prompted the company to keep the old SJ-body Wagoneers in production.
The Wagoneer line saw consolidation with the end of the ‘Brougham’ model, while the ‘Limited’ was renamed the ‘Grand Wagoneer’ and, in mid-1984, Jeep introduced a less expensive version called the WagoneerCustom, without thesimulated wood-grain exterior. The Custom had steel wheels with hubcaps, standard equipment was pared down, and it had part-time four-wheel drive. Despite its lower price, sales were poor and it was dropped after 1984.
The Grand Wagoneer remained €œthe gold standard of the SUV market€ and from 1985 it would continue in one version using the old SJ-body until the end of the Grand Wagoneer production under Chrysler. An improved handling package was introduced in 1985 that incorporated a revised front sway bar, gas filled shock absorbers, and lower friction rear springs.
Competition to this Jeep in 1985 included Chevrolet’s K5 Blazer, Ford’s Bronco, Dodge’s Ramcharger, GMC’s Jimmy, Plymouth’s Trailduster and Toyota’s Land Cruiser.

About Jeep
The history of Jeep is a tale of rugged innovation and an iconic journey from its roots as a military workhorse to its various civilian versions, including American competitors to the Range Rover.

The Birth of the Jeep:
The Jeep story began during World War II when the U.S. Army put out a call for a small, versatile, four-wheel-drive vehicle. Several American automakers responded, but the Willys-Overland company, along with its partner Ford, ultimately won the contract. The result was the Willys MB, an agile and tough vehicle that quickly earned the nickname "Jeep." The name's origin is a subject of some debate, but it's believed to have been derived from the military phonetic alphabet's "GP" designation, which stood for "General Purpose" or "Government Purpose."

World War II Service:
Jeeps became the backbone of the American military, serving in various roles from reconnaissance to medical transport. Their durability, four-wheel-drive capability, and ease of maintenance made them invaluable during the war. They were used in all theaters of the conflict and left an indelible mark on military history.

Post-War Transition:
After World War II, many surplus military Jeeps found their way into civilian hands, and their utility became evident beyond the battlefield. Recognizing this potential, Willys-Overland began producing the CJ (Civilian Jeep) series, starting with the CJ-2A in 1945. These early civilian Jeeps retained their military roots but were adapted for farm, ranch, and off-road use. They soon gained popularity among outdoor enthusiasts and those in need of a rugged, capable vehicle.

The Jeep Brand Expands:
Over the decades, the Jeep brand continued to evolve, introducing a wide range of models to cater to different consumer needs. The Jeep Wagoneer, introduced in 1963, was one of the earliest luxury SUVs and a competitor to the Range Rover, offering four-wheel drive and a comfortable ride.

The Jeep Cherokee, introduced in 1974, was a pioneering compact SUV that combined off-road capability with on-road comfort. Its success laid the foundation for the modern SUV segment.

In 1984, Jeep introduced the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which further advanced the brand's presence in the luxury SUV market. The Grand Cherokee was designed to deliver a refined driving experience without sacrificing its off-road prowess.

Jeep Wrangler, which evolved from the CJ series, has remained a steadfast symbol of off-road capability and rugged adventure. The Wrangler has garnered a devoted following of enthusiasts who appreciate its simplicity and go-anywhere attitude.

Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Gladiator are examples of modern Jeep models that cater to a wide range of consumer preferences and market segments.

American Competitors to the Range Rover:
While Jeep has produced various models to compete in the luxury SUV market, including the Grand Cherokee, they have also faced competition from American automakers like Cadillac and Lincoln, which have introduced their own luxury SUVs to compete with the Range Rover. These vehicles offer a blend of comfort, technology, and off-road capability, making them alternatives to the Range Rover for American consumers.

In conclusion, the history of Jeep is a story of adaptability and innovation, with the brand transitioning from its military origins to become a symbol of rugged individualism and adventure. Jeep's ability to blend off-road capability with on-road comfort has made it a respected and iconic American brand in the world of 4x4 vehicles.
