The Plymouth division was created in 1928 to build cars for the blue-collar American that were affordable. As the economy was heading into a recession, the timing was perfect and as a result, the Plymouth brand was the third best selling make by 1931. For 1934, Plymouth introduced the PE Deluxe and PF Models which served as a replacement for the PD and PCXX models of the year prior. The PE was offered in 2 door, 4 door, convertible, even a Westchester Suburban with the four-door sedan being the most popular. At the time, the PE model was considered the best engineered car in its class, featuring independent front suspension, 4-wheel hydraulic brakes, a full pressured and filtered engine oil system, and rubber engine mounts as standard equipment. Replacing the PD model, the PE wheelbase was also lengthened to 114 inches.
The 1934 Plymouth PE Deluxe is powered by a 201ci/77hp 6-Cylinder engine backed by the “free wheeling” transmission or an automatic clutch. The automatic clutch operated on engine vacuum and allowed the drivers to shift gears without using his left foot on the clutch pedal. Depending on the vacuum in the manifold unit either engaged or disengaged the clutch. The only movement required on the driver’s part was to shift the gear lever.
This particular Plymouth PE been nicely restored and is in great condition. Finished with correct steel wheels wrapped in period correct bias ply wide white walls it looks stunning. Whether cruising down the highway to your local car you’ll be sure to garner a ton of attention!
