In 1923 E.C. Gordon England developed and built a small racing car based on Austin Seven Parts which he successfully raced at Brooklands in the JCC 200 Mile Race of October that year. Very attractive replicas were then made available to the public to meet the demand for a small sports racing car built on the popular Austin Seven chassis and these were marketed as the Brooklands Super Sports from 1924.
Early examples had a fabric covering, but the polished aluminium body with pointed tail and streamlined fairings soon evolved. Prices were high, costing from £265 without wings and windscreen to £505 fully equipped in 1926, at a time when a Chummy cost just £149.
Tom Abernathy constructed a small number of meticulous replicas of the very successful “Brooklands Super Sports” and this car is built to this exact design from the original drawings. The body and frame were built by the renowned Austin Seven expert Andy Hastings on a correct 1928 chassis with original Bournemouth registration number.
The current owner purchased RU 8128 4 years ago and has spent this time finding ways to improve the Brooklands as you see it today. The sleek “Brooklands” body is finished in a highly polished black paint. Around the Austin Seven there is something to catch your eye from every angle including; period nickel AA badge, wing mounted side lamps, Brooklands aero screen, bonnet mounted union jacks, Brooklands fishtail exhaust, period “7HP Austin” graphics, cast GB plaque and many more.
The interior itself is a work of art; many hours have clearly been spend designing the turned aluminium dashboard there are working period instruments, a St Christopher badge and a period “ Performance Cars” sellers badge. The interior is finished beautifully in tanned leather, the seat backs are fluted and there are detachable pouches to both the drivers and passengers/mechanics side. There are also Gordon England makers plates in both footwells. To the lower sections and floor there are rubber matts, piped in the same tan leather. Beneath the drivers seat there is a useful storage box, which currently houses some useful spares for the longer journeys.
To the rear there is a large storage space, this is either accessible behind the passenger seat or by removing the spare wheel, also included in the sale are an assortment of books and tools.
The engine itself has just been completely rebuilt by one of the countries top pre-war engine builders, usually working on Rolls-Royce and Bentley engines, he turned his hand to an Austin Seven and the outcome is remarkable. The engine is smooth, strong, and without leaks. Thanks to the lightweight aluminium body there is plenty of power is reserve.
A great opportunity to own an elegant and rare Austin Seven, in our showroom and ready for viewing.
