Chrysler Imperial Imperial Convertible Coupe 1931

Allgemeine Beschreibung : The CG Imperial marked Chrysler’s arrival to the upper echelon of the highly competitive luxury automobile market in the 1930s. The sublime, low-slung styling was paired with a grand 145-inch wheelbase chassis, superb handling and braking, and a powerful L-head inline 8-cylinder engine. Like its contemporaries at Packard and Cadillac, Chrysler offered a wide variety of catalog body designs. The standard cars were built to Chrysler’s specifications by Briggs Manufacturing, though clients after something more exclusive could select from a handful of semi-custom styles created by the legendary American coachbuilder, LeBaron Carrosserie. Full custom cars were also built, though LeBaron’s semi-custom offerings stand among the most desirable of the range.

LeBaron’s elegant and graceful Convertible Coupe offers the sporty, open-air appeal of the Roadster with a welcome dash of practicality and comfort for longer-distance driving. Our featured example is one of just ten produced in 1931, and it has been a been a proud member of Frank Kleptz’s incredible Imperial collection since the 1980s. Finished in a lovely pale yellow and black color scheme accented with red wire wheels and interior, this is a charmingly handsome Chrysler with a finely preserved older restoration. According to a noted marque historian, this is one of the ten genuine CG Convertible Coupes, and records show it now wears a 1932 spec CH Imperial engine and later 3-speed gearbox.

As offered from the Kleptz collection, the CG Convertible Coupe is refreshingly honest, with an appealing patina to the paint and brightwork. A few minor blemishes are noted around the body due mostly to the age of the finish. Period-correct fittings include the distinct Gazelle radiator mascot, twin chrome trumpet horns, dual side-mount spares, and a painted metal trunk. The lovely interior features bright red leather trim along with a contrasting body-color dash. The red upholstery is in overall good condition, with some character from age and enjoyment, and likewise, the canvas top shows some fading but is otherwise fair and functional.

Beneath the hood sits Chrysler’s powerful 8-cylinder L-head engine. It is well detailed in the proper dark green finish, chrome details, and the signature bright red cylinder head. This example includes a period-correct Purolator oil cleaner canister and is updated with alternator charging. The engine runs well, though it may require some additional sorting before embarking on any serious drives. Once sorted, however, this lovely CG Convertible Coupe would make a fine companion on a wide range of driving events, where Chrysler’s magnificent Imperials truly shine.
