If someone described a car as a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car manufactured in Germany, the obvious conclusion would always be Porsche. Then, in 1977 the unthinkable happened in Stuttgart. The engine was moved to the front, two more cylinders were added, arranged in a V-formation, and for the first time since 1948 the little car company from Gmund, Austria had a true GT car for the masses: the 928. This new step forward for Porsche did not come without hurdles, but it easily solidified their ability to meet market demands and produce anything they set their minds to.

The technical specifications of the 928 are interesting. As the goal was to create a Luxury GT car to (at the time) hypothetically replace the famed 911, the car needed solid attributes of previously successful V8-powered cars as well as successful GT cars. All this, while still trying to meet new US safety and Emissions regulations. As a result, the 928 had similarities to that of the Chrysler 426 Hemi with 122MM Bore spacing, and early prototypes even had a 4-barrel carburetor for testing.

When it debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, it was well received due to its comfort and power as a GT car. However, it struggled to sell against the 911 and never really took off as Porsche anticipated. 18 years later, however, the 928 was still in production and saw quite a few variations, such as the S, S4, GT, and GTS models amongst others. Today the 928 has become somewhat of an icon for an era and has remained as a car with a cult-like following that still is embellished by enthusiasts around the globe.

The Porsche 928 on offer here, chassis #9289201411, is a 1979 model year, built just two years into the overall Porsche 928 production cycle. It is beautifully finished in Schwarz Metallic with complimenting ‘phone dial’ wheels as well as a Pasha interior, one of the best interiors Porsche ever offered, in our humble opinion! It has been very well maintained over the years and show just 32,548 original miles. Its first owner accumulated around 19,000 miles in the 23 years of ownership before changing hands with its second owner who resided in Michigan in the year 2002. During their ownership, the car only gained another 10,000 miles over 18 years before it was realized that the car was going to sit more and more as values climbed, so the decision was made to sell it. The second owner ended up selling the 928 to Casey Putsch of Perrysburg, Ohio, in December of 2019. Casey has a large YouTube automotive channel as well as being the founder of http://www.geniusgarageracing.com, which specializes in automotive-focused educational programming. For the next year, he used this 928 as part of his educational content and began a light refurbishment, which included:

Upholstered cloth interior with Pasha
New black upholstery on the fronts of the front seats and the backs of the rear seats
Leather wrap on the original steering wheel
New dash switches, knobs, etc
Plastic dash cover
Tune CIS fuel injection
After Casey’s ownership, the car made its way to Reno, Nevada, where it spent a little under 2 years, and was driven sparingly while receiving work to make it even nicer.

Today this example remains in very nice overall condition, and the interior looks great thanks to the freshened/upgraded Pasha interior. The front and rear seats have been reupholstered in factory Pasha that was ordered from Germany with no signs of wear. The door panel inserts have also been upgraded to Pasha. The carpet is original, as are the floor mats and the Blaupunkt cassette radio. The underside and engine bay are very clean and also indicative of a low-mile example. The car is very dry and obviously not driven in harsh conditions. There are no signs of any prior damage or rust repairs. An extensive mechanical service was carried out within the last 3 years, as well as a full refurbishment of the air conditioning, brake, fuel, intake, vacuum systems, and much more costing well over $25,000. From our time spent enjoying this grand tourer, we admired how compliant and effortlessly fast this 928 is.

Accompanying the car is the original owner’s manual and numerous recent service records and invoices.
