General History

Considered to be one of the best Bertone-designed sport coupes, the tidy greenhouse, low but roomy profile, and clean body lines made the 105 series Alfa Romeo coupe one of the most successful cars in the Alfa Romeo lineup. Built from 1963 -1975, the charming, hunkered down front-engine, rear drive sport coupe offered seating for four adults and spirited performance. Although the design shared many mechanical features with the Giulietta, the new unibody/monocoque platform was very innovative and lightweight. Live rear axle, disc brakes all around, dual overhead cam, and 5-speed gearbox, all resulted in a very effective driving combination.

When first built, the early body design featured a unique hood detail along the leading edge - a slight “step” down where the forward edge of the front fenders met the hood line. Although this feature was removed from the standard offering (retained in the 1300 Junior), the 1967 models continued this feature. In 1965 the Sprint GT “Veloce” model was offered with a range of improvements which included the 1600cc engine, twin carburetors, bigger oil pan, spirited camshafts, and different intake and exhaust, all of which greatly improved performance. Exterior changes included stainless steel bumpers, Veloce script on the trunk, Alfa clover leaf emblems on the C-posts, three-bar elongated grill trim, and a 7 bar Alfa-crest grill trim (6 bar on non-Veloce models).

Owner History

This desirable Stepnose Alfa GTV was purchased from the former owner, a resident of Southern California who had owned the car for several years before restoring it in 2012. The owner reported that the car had been in Southern California and so had not succumbed to excessive chassis rust as so many of these often require extensive chassis repairs. The restoration was completed approximately 10 years ago, and the owner enjoyed the car, reportedly driving it daily until his passing. At some point under prior ownership, the engine was upgraded to a 1750cc unit which remains in the car today.

Purchased by the current owner in 2022, he enjoyed the car for a brief period before commissioning work performed by Alfa Performance Connection, Orange, CA in April and August 2023. Services totaled over $9,000 including a transmission rebuild (3 new synchros, seals, and transmission mount), new clutch and input shaft bushing, new inner shaft bushing, and a new inner shift boot. Further work included window adjustments, installation of a Pipercross air filter system (original Alfa unit retained with the car), rerouting for fuel lines and fuel filter, tachometer and gauge refurbishment, and front-end alignment. In August 2023, with 35,402 miles, the car returned to APC where an Alfaholics suspension kit and Alfaholics exhaust system were sourced for installation. A set of front spindles were installed, wheel bearings repacked, new springs and front sway bar installed, and a brake kit with new Wilwood front calipers (rear Guilia calipers retained), new discs, and new brake pads installed all around. A new set of Vredestein tires were installed, new pedal shafts installed for exhaust clearance, a new contemporary upgraded distributor fitted, and a contemporary stereo with Sony amp discretely installed featuring a hidden Bluetooth controller and (removable) contemporary front speakers located in the forward kick panels.

Other work performed on the car included the installation of a new headliner, new window winder handles, new inner door handles, a new rear-view mirror, new door armrest, new sun visors, new headlights, a fresh pair of wipers, and misc. other small interior items replaced as needed to unify the cosmetic appearance of the interior.

Cosmetic Overview

Today this `stepnose` presents as a very cohesive restoration with a handsome combination of lightly aged restoration, recent mechanical freshening, and tasteful Alfaholics upgrades cleverly concealed in the original configuration. The attractive Bertone design is finished in a beautiful vivid red with excellent exterior preparation and a smooth, glossy finish. Various stone chips are evident at the front of the car, touched up by hand but visible only under closer review. The chrome is in excellent condition with very nice polish on the stainless-steel bumpers and other trim. Glass and window garnish are in very good condition as well including both front and rear window rubber. The GTA style cast alloy wheels (contemporary replicas) are beautifully refinished in satin silver with center caps and chrome plated lug nuts, wearing recently installed Vredestein Sprint Classic 185/70 VR 14 tires, dated 2023. The body panel fit is straight and true with consistent panel gaps at all openings reflective of a sound body and long-term California ownership. The door handles are in excellent condition and crisp latching when shut. The distinctive central seven-bar Alfa grill is in excellent condition, flanked by the three-bar intake trim overlaying the correctly painted flat black grill mesh, each of which are exclusive features of the Veloce model. Various trim, emblems, and details throughout the exterior are beautifully finished and deliver a visually appealing appearance to the overall exterior.

The interior has been properly finished and presents very well overall including excellent and correctly upholstered front bucket seats and door panels and contoured rear seats. Both front and rear seats are equipped with seatbelts. The center console houses the 5-speed manual gear selector surrounded by black carpet. The recently installed new off-white headliner is correct along with the recently replaced black sun visors. The dash pad and wood panel insert are both in excellent condition and the instruments display excellent color, crisp numeric indication, and excellent chrome bezel trim. A modern Bluetooth equipped audio system is concealed featuring two front speakers mounted over custom made kick panels, which can be easily removed. A wood rim Hellebore GTA style steering wheel is installed. The trunk area is clean and structurally sound, appearing to still retain the original red paint. A matching spare wheel and older Vredestein tire fits in the recessed tire tub. A correct jack is in place, the Sony XM-GS400 amp is mounted on the trunk panel, and a black insulated carpet set covers the trunk floor. There is no evidence of structural corrosion in the trunk area.

The engine compartment and 1750cc engine have been properly prepared with attention to correct original features, excellent detailing, and appropriate finishes applied to original components. The engine is a later series 1750 featuring a polished alloy cam cover, modern battery, tubular header exhaust, and twin Weber 40 DCOE 151 dual-throat carburetors. Fuel is delivered via a modern Facet Gold-Flo electric fuel pump and the Webers breathe through a contemporary Pipercross foam air cleaner element, although the car’s original cast alloy airbox is included with the sale. The restoration features original style components, generally correct hoses and hardware. The underside is in very good condition with no evidence of structural compromise, no immediately visible signs of structural corrosion, and sound suspension mounting points. Suspension, rear axle straps, brand new exhaust, and assorted cast alloy engine and transmission components are in excellent condition.

The car starts easily and settles into a warm burbling idle, ready for action. The 5-speed manual gearbox shifts smoothly benefiting from a recent transmission rebuild including a new clutch and three new synchros. Brakes and handling are vastly improved given the Wilwood front disc brake upgrade, new rear disc brakes, and Alfaholics suspension enhancements. The car handles very well, delighting any Alfa enthusiast who takes the wheel to experience the captivating 1750cc engine, engaging 5-speed manual transmission, and excellent cosmetic features.

Included with this car

The car is accompanied by 2023 service invoices from, the original air cleaner and cast alloy carburetor plenum assembly, a pair of Bimecc wheel spacers, a pair of wheel hubs, wheel stud bolts, and various small parts.
