Chrysler 300 440 cubic inch V8 1969

Allmän beskrivning : One of only 1933 Chrysler 300 convertibles built in 1969. Loaded with options, great color combination, long-term ownership history. 440 cubic inch V8, automatic. Very clean and solid underneath. An unusual full-sized ragtop ready to enjoy.

It’s a mystery why these big Chrysler convertibles aren’t bringing stronger money. They’re rare, powerful, easy to drive, and the all-new “fuselage” styling in 1969 was undeniably attractive. Only 1933 of these heavy cruisers were built in ’69 and only a handful more in 1970 before they would disappear from the landscape forever. Dressed in B3 Bahama Blue, it’s a handsome car that deserves the “300” moniker—it’s luxurious but there’s a sporting edge to it. It was repainted perhaps 25 years ago and has been in long-term ownership for decades, meaning that it has been a fair-weather cruiser for most of its life. The doors line up nicely, the hood closes with a push rather than a slam, and while there might be some work in the quarters, it was well done and doesn’t distract from the car’s clean lines. Sure, there are signs of use and age, but overall it presents quite well and for the money, we doubt there’s more sheetmetal per dollar available anywhere. Hidden headlights were all the rage in 1969, and the Chrysler guys managed to make it look clean and sophisticated rather than baroque, and the big chrome bumper surrounding the grille was a corporate look that works better there than it does on, say, the Charger. You’ll also note a beautiful strip of brightwork that runs along the tops of the fenders and doors, starting at the fender-mounted turn signal indicators, and full-width taillights fit with the overall theme. This is a handsome car!

The interior features attractive blue upholstery and bucket seats flanking a third “buddy seat” in the middle. There’s stretch-out room for everyone on board and the driver gets a cool 3-spoke steering wheel and a fairly comprehensive set of gauges. Other options include factory A/C (still R12 and needs to be serviced), a power driver’s seat, power windows, dual remote mirrors, and an unusual signal-seeking AM/FM radio. Everything inside is in very good condition and the only real demerit we could find was a single popped seam on the outer bolster of the driver’s seat, but it’s pretty minor. Carpets and door panels are quite nice and seat belts were standard equipment in 1969, so no worries about safety in this big boat. The black power convertible top works like it should and stows under a matching blue boot with a surprisingly flat profile that really looks great. And talk about trunk space! This thing is HUGE! It’s correctly finished with the original plaid mat plus a brand-new spare tire and factory jack assembly.

Chrysler’s biggest V8, a 440 cubic inch mill, was standard equipment in the massive 300, and it makes the big ragtop feel much lighter on its feet than you’d expect. We have no history on a rebuild, but it runs superbly with big engine torque that you expect in a luxury cruiser like this. A coat of Chrysler Turquoise engine enamel makes it look fresh and clean and it was fitted with the air cleaner assembly from the upgraded TNT model (although this is not a TNT engine). It starts easily and after some grumpiness when it’s cold, pulls the convertible around with enthusiasm. The engine bay is neat and tidy, suggesting proper care over the years, and there are no real deviations from stock. The heavy-duty TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission clicks off seamless shifts and we believe there are 3.23 gears in the 8.75-inch rear end, so it’s a relaxed cruiser on the highway. And as long as you’re under there, check out the super clean floors, solid torque boxes, and clean rockers, all of which make this unit-body ragtop feel solid on the road. The single exhaust has a muted V8 hum that’s entirely appropriate and it sits on steel wheels with factory hubcaps and recent 225/75/15 whitewall radials.

Extras include the original owner’s manual, period advertising, and a spare set of hubcaps.

If you like muscle but want something a little unusual, this Chrysler 300 is a great choice. Attractive, comfortable, and yes, just a little sporting, it’s quite appealing. And look again at the price—you won’t find many other full-sized luxury/muscle ragtops that are this affordable. If that’s your kind of fun, give us a call today!
