Looking for a vintage pickup with serious off-road cred and timeless good looks? A strong V8 motor but not just another run-of-the-mill Ford or Chevy? Then this 1977 Jeep J-10 4x4 pickup should serve you very nicely. A nicely refinished and rarely-seen truck that looks darn good but not so perfect that it's afraid to go off-road, which is, after all, a Jeep's natural habitat.
With the Autumn Red paint on this truck, it just looks like it's waiting to go have an adventure. It's not some drab finish like many of these Jeep trucks had from the factory, but rather a vivid shade of paint that looks right and offers a great shine that's perfect for a vehicle of this vintage. The squared-off lines of the Jeep recalls the Wagoneer and the early Cherokee, and that's exactly why we love these trucks, with an iconic front end that even the youngest motoring fans will recognize. You can also see echoes of this truck in today's modern Jeeps, particularly the squared-off fenders, handsome chrome-and-black grille, and those oversized bumpers. You don't see many of these today because they tended to rust in the most demonic ways possible, but this one was spared that fate thanks to a life lived down south where snow was a non-issue. And even though these J-10s could handle anything you throw at them, in particular the short wheelbase V8s like this one, it appears that this beauty was kept off the trails for the most part. It was repainted not too long ago and still looks great, showing only minor signs of use, and if you want to take it up a notch, a professional cut and buff would really make it shine. But then again, you might be afraid to use it as designed at that point, although that may not be such a bad thing; these trucks are endangered and we want clean examples like this '77 to be around for generations to come. With that being said, it's built for the rough stuff should the need arise, especially with the big bumper and guards up front, complete with a couple running lights just below. There's also a heavy-duty rear bumper with hitch out back and a very nicely finished and painted bed that's protected with a heavy-duty rubber mat. By the looks of the stainless side trim, chrome on the grille, and the chrome bumpers fore and aft, this J-10 is likely a part of the 'Pioneer' package trim level, which was charming in its simplicity compared to its Honcho cousin. And we have to say, that added brightwork looks fantastic up against the Autumn Red finish.
The interior is pure 1970s but without the funky colors, and it really works well for this sweet Jeep truck. The black vinyl seat covers feature gray cloth with vinyl inserts, and the supportive buckets are exactly right for this fun truck and surprisingly make the Jeep feels more upscale than its competition. Matching door panels, plush black carpets, a handsome dash with simple, easy-to-read gauges laid inside a woodgrain bezel, and an original leather-wrapped steering wheel with perhaps the last AMC-Jeep horn ring in production all make it feel old-fashioned. And we really love that. But don't confuse vintage with obsolete, because you also get under-dash factory A/C, a Pyle AM/FM/USB stereo radio, a column-shifting automatic transmission, and a padded dash top that adds to the upscale vibe. There's even a taut headliner up top that further insulates the cab the rear window slides open, which is a must-have on any old pick-up. It's all in very good condition and just like the exterior, it suggests that roughing it isn't necessarily part of the equation.
Power comes from a torquey 360 cubic inch V8, making this Jeep a lot of fun on or off the pavement. It's pretty original under the hood, but you can see that it has always been well maintained and with a big carburetor and simple ignition system, it's easy to keep it running at its best. It's packed tight in there along with the A/C compressor, power brake system, power steering pump, and snorkeled air cleaner, but it's all done to accessible factory specs, and with a positively gigantic radiator up front the block stays nice and cool. The 3-speed automatic transmission is a GM TH400, so it's virtually indestructible and the Dana 4-wheel-drive system uses a 2-speed transfer case for proper off-road use. Stock exhaust manifolds feed a dual exhaust system that has a perfect V8 burble, there are solid axles at both ends, and a leveling kit with heavy-duty shocks and springs sets the truck's killer stance, making this Jeep capable of going just about anywhere. Chrome Laredo wheels are a Jeep 4x4 tradition and they carry big 32x11.50-15 white-letter off-road radials.
This is an incredibly cool old truck with fantastic off-roading abilities and a unique look that's seldom seen on the streets these days.
