Pontiac GTO 400 cubic inch V8 1969

Allmän beskrivning : The guys at Pontiac were paying attention when Chrysler rolled out the Road Runner/Super Bee twins as low-cost, high-performance cars aimed at an even more youthful market than the rest of their muscle cars. Attempting to capture that kind of no-frills attitude, they decided to build an affordable GTO. And to prove they weren’t taking themselves too seriously, they grabbed a catchphrase from one of the year’s most popular TV shows, “Laugh-In.” The phrase, “Here come da Judge!” became a part of America’s vernacular during the Summer of Love, and gave the GTO Judge (they hoped) a carefree, youthful attitude. In truth, the GTO became an upscale model, packaging a bunch of GTO options with a lower price tag than ordering them separately, but still adding $332 to the GTO’s bottom-line. The result is still one of the most revered muscle cars of them all, a car whose playful name still commands serious respect on the streets.

This 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge hardtop wears its original color, code 40 Mayfair Maize, and most of you probably haven’t seen it before. Of the less conventional Judge colors, it’s a refreshing change from the usual Carousel Red or Vedoro Green. The car received a very high-quality frame-off restoration about 10 years ago and despite some use since then, it still looks fantastic. Paint and bodywork were extremely well done and as a result this car fits together beautifully and has a deep shine that shows very well. Once the paint was dry, they installed correct decals in green, yellow, and white that add just the right amount of contrast. Other upgrades include the urethane front bumper that completely transforms the GTO’s look, folding headlights, a Ram Air hood, and a decklid spoiler, all of which were designed to give the Judge a look to match its aggressive personality. It worked, because the Judge made the Mopar twins look a little plain when it hit the streets in 1969. Add in those cool little side marker lights, “Ram Air” markings on the hood, a few shiny bits, and you get a car that looks as fast as it drives.

The Judge also included bucket seats, with these wrapped in correct code 259 black vinyl, and they do give the interior an upscale vibe. A few touches of wood (both simulated and not) warm up the Judge’s passenger compartment, and virtually everything inside has been restored or replaced so it looks quite fresh. Optional Rally gauges cover the basics, with an aftermarket oil pressure gauge under the dash, along with the manual control fo the Ram Air hood scoop, designed to force-feed the 400 cubic inch V8 cool, fresh air. The original AM radio lives in the center of the dash and the wood-handled shifter makes it easy to grab the right gear in the TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Door panels are unique to the GTO and a “Judge” emblem on the glove box lid reminds you that this isn’t a garden-variety Goat. There’s also a good-sized trunk out back, which has correct spatter-finish paint, a reproduction trunk mat, and a matching full-sized spare with jack assembly.

The Judge came standard with Pontiac’s 400 cubic inch Ram Air III V8, which was rated at a rather stout 366 horsepower. The Ram Air III engine is very street-friendly thanks to a hydraulic cam and 4-barrel carburetor, and given the Judge’s relatively modest curb weight, it’s a formidable performer. It appears to be a warranty replacement block, and it was fully rebuilt at the time of restoration, this one starts easily, idles properly, and offers a big hit of torque when you need it most—the Judge is still a force to reckoned with on the street. It’s also neatly detailed with traditional Pontiac Turquoise engine enamel, standard chrome valve covers, and that big Ram Air cleaner on top, as well as little stuff like tower hose clamps, coded plug wires, and proper finishes throughout. Power steering and disc brakes were optional, but this Judge received both, making it very easy to handle. The only real deviation from stock is the Edelbrock intake manifold, which has been cleverly painted to blend in with the rest of the factory equipment. Turn the key and it fires every time and on the road it stays cool, makes plenty of oil pressure, and delivers the kind of fun something that looks like this should deliver.

The undercarriage is as nicely detailed as the engine bay, showing only minor signs of use and no evidence of rust or previous damage. The TH400 3-speed automatic transmission was a $227.04 option, and it is quite likely the most durable automatic transmission ever invented, so go ahead and put your foot on the floor all you like. In back there are 3.55 gears on a Saf-T-Track limited slip and with the automatic transmission, they’re an excellent choice—this car snaps through traffic with far more precision than you’d expect. A reproduction exhaust system has the right tone that never gets too loud or annoying and there’s a new gas tank hanging in back. Rally II wheels were standard equipment, and since the Judge was ostensibly designed to be a price-leader, the trim rings were omitted. Sitting on F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval bias-ply tires, this Judge has a very period-correct look and feel.

Documentation includes a full PHS package verifying that it’s a real Judge in original colors.

The GTO remains the perennial favorite among muscle car fans, and the Judge delivers on its swagger with big performance and surprising comfort. We’ve never had a better-driving GTO in our inventory than this, and the unusual color makes it stand out.
