1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza by Pur Sang

Dark Blue with Burgundy Leather Interior

The Alfa Romeo 8C is widely considered to be the quintessential prewar sports and racing car. It has all the ingredients of a legendary sports car of the highest caliber: rarity, beauty, sophisticated engineering, and fantastic competition pedigree. Like the successful 6C 1750 which preceded it, the 8C 2300 was designed by Vittorio Jano and had at its heart a sophisticated twin cam engine (gear driven). By adding two more cylinders of the same bore and stroke, the 6C became the 8C. A Roots supercharger provided forced induction, and in racing tune, the cars were especially potent. Indeed, the racing performance of the 8C was unequivocally dominant. Unseating the previous reigning champion, the Mercedes SSKL, the 8C was virtually unbeatable during its heyday, winning the Mille Miglia in 1932, 1933 (finishing 1st through 8th places!), and 1934. The car also won the Targa Florio in 1931, 1932, and 1933, and various Grands Prix including Monaco in 1932, and of course Monza, which is where the racing variant received the Monza designation.

The Pur Sang Alfa Romeos (and Bugattis) are fascinating and beautifully-wrought cars that are crafted to accurately recreate the experience of some of the most legendary racing cars of all time. The company describes their facility as an atelier, and a careful examination of the automobiles they produce, as well as the manner in which they produce them, demonstrates that that term is entirely appropriate. The company emerged from the restoration shop of Jorge Anadón in Argentina, who restored genuine prewar Bugattis but lamented the fact that he would never be able to own one himself. While he had one such car apart for restoration, he fastidiously measured each component and built tooling to accurately reproduce the car for himself. Although initially intended to be a one-off project, he eventually built others, and over the last thirty years, hundreds of Pur Sang recreations have been built by the skilled craftsmen who build the cars by hand using the same techniques with which the cars were originally constructed.

Because the company is based in Argentina, which has strict anti-importation laws, the cars are made in house. Pur Sang has their own foundry, CNC machining facility, they make their own tires, and beat and finish their own aluminum panels using an English wheel. The accuracy of these cars is extremely impressive. Experienced car enthusiasts would be extremely hard-pressed to determine that these cars are not originals, and indeed, most parts are interchangeable with original cars. Modern metallurgy is used where possible, but the engine retains the overhead camshafts and architecture of the original cars.

Departures from the original cars are few and carefully chosen. In addition to metallurgical advances in components such as the engines, the cars can be equipped with modern distributors and electric cooling fan, both of which this particular car has. It was built for its enthusiastic owner a few years ago, and has covered less than 200 kilometer since its construction. Consequently, it is cosmetically excellent, with a few minor blemishes but strong overall presentation. The paint is generally excellent, with a few chips mostly limited to the edges of the engine cover opening. There is also some surface cracking on the right running board. The bright trim is excellent, as are the lights and glass. The visible suspension components are cosmetically excellent without appearing over-restored. The attention to detail is excellent with contrasting deep red wheels and safety wire throughout.

The interior is in excellent condition, with a high level of craftsmanship and correctness in presentation. The steering wheel is spot on, as is the appearance and layout of the Jaeger instruments. The throttle is in the center, as in the original 8C, and the plain painted dashboard is also correct. The leather is excellent and aside from a few scratches in the floor and painted transmission tunnel, there are few flaws to report.

The engine compartment is stunning and the engine, supercharger, and ancillaries are beautiful objects that have been reproduced with fantastic authenticity. The components are clean and nicely detailed, although not spotless, consistent with a car that has been carefully enjoyed. The driving experience is tremendously visceral and faithfully captures the excitement of an original 8C 2300 Monza. The engine noise is highly authentic and is arguably one of the finest engine noises of all time. The character of an inline-8 is very unique and absolutely intoxicating, while the gear driven valvetrain and supercharger add another layer of aural complexity that could never be explained in words. The gearbox shifts well and is unsynchronized, rewarding the skilled driver. The chassis and suspension are extremely direct and impressively precise, and the entire experience allows the drive to simultaneously feel accomplished and special but also develop deep appreciation for the drivers who raced these cars so successfully in the first half of the 1930s.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a car that accurately captures every meaningful aspect of the 8C 2300 at a small fraction of the of the price of an original 8C. Perhaps one of the best things about this car is that it begs to be used. While original 8CS are worth millions and are irreplaceable historical artifacts, this car can be repaired by its original manufacturer should anything happen to it, but also accurately captures the intoxicating directness and mechanical character of one of the greatest cars of all time. Thoughtfully but subtly upgraded for enhanced usability (in ways that would be entirely acceptable on an original example) without in any way diminishing the experience, the quality and craftsmanship of these cars is absolutely tremendous and deeply impressive. The driving experience is highly authentic and the car represents a very rare opportunity and an impressive value.
