Mercury Comet 1962

General description : 1962 Mercury Comet Gasser The term “Gasser” was coined in the 50’s and applied to heavily modified drag racing cars. The name derives from the fact that they raced in the gasoline fueled class as opposed to the methanol or nitro classes. Before the days of “Pro Stock” these were the fastest stock appearing hot rods you would see at the track. Being primarily focused on racing their appearance featured a lifted front end for better weight distribution on acceleration and were often modified with weight reduction techniques. They also commonly had engine swaps and heavily customized suspensions all with the intention of getting them down the track faster than their competitors. This very cool Gasser is based on the 1962 Mercury Comet which was named after the space race that was getting every ones attention at the time. The flat Black paint is combined with Red accents on the hood and fits look very well. It has some old school lettering in various places and on the sides display its name “The Comet Flash.” The rear bumper is still in place but the front bumper has been removed. The grill has also been customized to remove one of the double headlights following with the weight reduction tactics of back in the day. The car has Cragar wheels up front and custom Drag wheels in the back with Firestone Drag slicks. The swapped out 454 big block motor is proudly displayed through the hood being topped off with a tunnel ram and dual quad Holley carburetors. The motor has plenty of power and is kept cool with an aftermarket aluminum radiator. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the car has also been upgraded with disc front brakes. The interior of the car has been entirely redone in a very cool vintage Red and White color combination. The bench seats are done in Tuck and Roll pleats which really suits the overall style of the car. The door panels have been totally stripped and redone with aluminum panels. The dash has been kept mostly original with its original radio and gauges. A second gauge pod has been added below for the Temp, Volt, and Oil pressure gauges. It also has a Power Level Mark II A&E System in place to provide switches for things like the fuel pump. In front of the driver sits and aftermarket tilt column and steering wheel done in Black and Red. This is well built cool classic that that has a lot going for it. This car has been SOLD! About Mercury
Mercury, the automotive brand, has a rich history that extends beyond its role in the customization and hot-rodding scene, particularly with the iconic Mercury Eight. Here are some key points to know about Mercury:

Formation and Early Years:
Mercury was introduced by the Ford Motor Company in 1938 as a mid-priced brand, positioned between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. The brand aimed to fill the gap between these two segments.
Mercury Eight:
The Mercury Eight, launched in 1939, is perhaps the most famous model in the brand's history. It featured a sleek design and a powerful V8 engine. This model became popular for customization and hot-rodding, earning it a significant place in American automotive culture.
Customization Culture:
The Mercury Eight, with its distinctive styling and relatively affordable price, became a favorite among custom car builders. It played a pivotal role in the development of the custom car and hot rod culture, particularly in the post-World War II era.
Lead Sleds and Customization:
The term "lead sled" is often associated with heavily customized cars from the 1940s and 1950s. These cars, including the Mercury Eight, were often modified with lowered suspensions, chopped roofs, and other stylistic changes. Lead sleds were a prominent part of the custom car scene, and the Mercury Eight was a popular choice for such modifications.
Post-War Prosperity:
In the post-World War II period, Mercury, like many other American automakers, experienced a surge in popularity as the economy boomed. The brand contributed to the era's fascination with stylish and powerful automobiles.
Evolution of Models:
Over the years, Mercury continued to produce various models, contributing to Ford's lineup. Some notable models include the Mercury Monterey, Mercury Comet, and Mercury Cougar.
Decline and Discontinuation:
Despite periods of success, Mercury faced challenges in establishing a unique identity separate from Ford. As consumer preferences shifted, the brand struggled, and Ford eventually announced the discontinuation of Mercury in 2010.
Legacy in Popular Culture:
Mercury, especially models like the Mercury Eight, holds a significant place in American popular culture. Its association with the customization and hot-rodding scene, as well as its distinctive designs, has left a lasting impact.
In summary, while the Mercury Eight is celebrated for its role in the customization and hot-rodding subculture, Mercury as a brand played a broader role in automotive history, contributing to mid-priced segments and reflecting the automotive trends of its time.
