The innovative world of Hot Rodding spawned from the convergence of used thirties cars and underfinanced teenagers looking for inexpensive ways to invigorate their otherwise boring 1950s lives. Though times and money have evolved the hobby through the ensuing 70 years span, the energy and excitement for Hot Rodding has always prevailed. Among the many significant participants in this genre, many contemporary experts have emerged, particularly in California where hot rods and street rods have become a major part of the specialty car building industry. Roy Brizio of Roy Brizio Street Rods, San Francisco, CA is one of these leading builders. With an established reputation for building award-winning hot rods, each of their uniquely constructed and beautifully finished hot rods are in keeping with vintage hot-rodding excellence. Importantly, Brizio’s cars can be driven with confidence and shown at top tier events where they continually win awards for design excellence and construction.

This project began with an original 1934 Ford 3-window coupe, which had been preserved for many years as a solid original car where it awaited build as part of Brizio’s private collection before becoming the basis for this commission. Remarkably documented back to 1948 when this car was titled in Colorado to Donald Malone, the car was later transferred to Clemes Motor Co. in Colorado, December 1949. Amazed at the original condition and clean steel body, Brizio purchased the car some years ago, where it patiently waited for a client to complete a fresh build. By 2007 a well-known NorCal hot rod enthusiast commissioned Brizio and his team who selected this car as the basis for the build of this hot rod.

The all-steel Ford stamped body was already in excellent preserved condition when the team began the project. The body was stripped, and all metal work properly treated and finished with epoxy primer. A 392 cubic inch Ford Racing V8 was prepped with Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Dual Quad carburetors and Motorcraft distributor and ignition box. Some of the many detailed parts acquired for the build included Patriot Headers, Turbo tone mufflers, Lime Works 32” steering column, and a Juliano’s 37 banjo steering wheel. In preparation for installation to the frame and body, the metal floor was cut and trimmed to accommodate the new foot pedals and 5-speed transmission, while a new center tunnel was fabricated and welded into the steel floor. The chassis was professionally powder coated for durability, a custom driveshaft fabricated, and a solid dropped front axle with radius rods installed on the front suspension and cast aluminum finned drum brakes were installed at all four corners. A new wiring loom was purchased and wired to Autometer gauges, Dynamat Xtreme insulation installed, window regulators rebuilt for smooth door and rear windows, specially constructed E-brake cable mounts installed using stainless hardware, and the fully coated exhaust system installed. The body and fenders were sent to Camilleri’s Auto Works for finishing and pinstriping, chrome finishes were performed by Sherm’s Plating, and the custom stitched interior finished in deep burgundy leather by award winning artisan Syd Chavers.

The completed 3-Window Coupe debuted in January at the 2009 60th Grand National Roadster Show where it won 1st Place in the Pre 1935 Early Street Rod Class, additionally winning the Street Rodder Magazine “Ford in a Ford” award. In February 2009 this 34 Ford went on to win both 1st Place and the “Outstanding Street Rod” award at the San Francisco Rod Custom & Motorcycle Show. After completion, the car was driven occasionally by the commissioning owner who enjoyed participating in local automotive events until his passing. The odometer currently indicates 1,964 miles the majority of which were accumulated by the commissioning owner. The car has remained with the commissioning family since the build was completed in 2009.

Today this Ford 3-Window Coupe continues to impress as an exemplary street rod – capturing just the right level of design and performance features while maintaining the very best aspects of the original design. Every detail of the build is expertly crafted, with finishes that depict the top-level build quality originally performed by the Brizio build team. The cosmetic condition remains very nice, and the interior stands up to high expectations in virtually all areas. The deep black paint is glossy and smooth and exhibits excellent coverage throughout. The stance is perfect with just the right amount of drop and dive stretched out over the 111” wheelbase. Gently lowered to the ideal ride height, the mirror black finish punches up against the painted red steel 16” rear wheels featuring chrome center caps and trim rings with smaller front wheels for added rake. A set of Goodyear 195/65 R15 front and 245/70 R16 rear tires are mounted. Traditional taillights, dropped front axle, finned drum brakes, louvered hood, and floating headlamps all add up to just the right look and feel on this hot rod. Underneath the centrally hinged and louvered hood, the Ford Racing 392 is finished with polished finned Edelbrock aluminum valve covers, 130-amp alternator, curved distributor, painted red accents, twin 4-barrel carburetors topped with a chrome oval air cleaner, aluminum intake manifold, Patriot headers, and other custom details.

The interior is a fantastic expression of hot rod simplicity captured with excellent material quality, rich deep burgundy leather, and beautifully finished details reflecting the original 1934 design while updating the look and feel to contemporary hot rod excellence skillfully applied by master upholsterer Syd Chavers. Handsome interior details include painted faux wood over the metal inner window garnish and dashboard, felted headliner, and plated door hardware. Additional features include a set of matching red seat belts, a quick release handle for the rear rumble seat, and a roll down rear window for increased ventilation. All the components have been carefully selected including the banjo steering wheel, Autometer gauges, and 5-speed gear selector for the manual transmission. The rear rumble seat is finished in matching burgundy leather with a specially fabricated and carpeted cover for the battery which features a charging dongle for a battery tender. This hot rod is accompanied by invoices from Roy Brizio documenting the build, parts and service invoices from contributing vendors, photos of the build process, and selected vintage ownership records.

One of a kind, beautifully finished, and constructed by premier builder Roy Brizio with top-tier supporting experts, this award-winning 1934 Ford 3-window hot rod not only delivers power, performance, and exceptional build quality, it offers the next fortunate owner a chance to enjoy contemporary hot rodding at its very best.
