Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition 2000

MODEL HISTORY

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a high performance sports car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors that is based on the stander Lancer. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All use two-litre, turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive systems.
 

The Evolution was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Japanese-spec cars were limited by a gentlemen's agreement to advertise no more than 276hp, a mark already reached by Evolution IV. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-spec Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 317hp.
 

The Evolution VI was produced from January 1999 until March 2001. The improvements over its predecessor mainly focused on cooling and engine durability. It received a larger intercooler, larger oil cooler, and new pistons. The Evolution VI received new bodywork yet again, with the most easily noticeable change being within the front bumper where the huge fog lights were reduced in size and moved to the corners for better airflow.
 

Great rally success was achieved in the WRC Rallies from 1996-1999 thanks to the legendry Finn Tommi Makinen for clinching the drivers titles in this period and help from team mate Richard Burns for clinching the constructors championship for the first, and thus far only time in 1998.
 

In 1999 the Tommi Makinen Edition was released. It featured a different front bumper, red and black Recaro seats embossed with the Tommi Makinen logo, 17-inch white Enkei wheels, a red-stitched leather Momo steering wheel and shift knob, a titanium turbine that spooled up more quickly, front upper strut brace, lowered ride height (with tarmac stages in mind), and a quicker steering ratio, among other things. The Tommi Makinen Edition was only available in Scotia White, Satellite Silver, Pyrenees Black, Canal Blue, and Passion Red (the only colour scheme available with the Works stripes and decals kit). The car is sometimes referred to as an Evolution 6.5, or TME for short.

EXTERIOR

Dazzling in Passion Red this rare Evo VI is aesthetically very similar to the Championship winning cars made famous by rally legend, Tommi Makinen. With just 212 examples produced in this colour it comes as no surprise that red TMEs have fast become the most sought after of all.
 

This particular example boasts an excellent finish throughout and is complete with the correct Works stripes and decals applied. The gleaming red hue has resisted the urge to fade, and presents without a single scuff or scrape. Most importantly both the body and underside remain entirely corrosion-free.

INTERIOR

Inside, the car remains in superb condition. The special TME Recaro seats present with minimal signs of use; the cloth bolsters are usually the first areas to wear but these remain in excellent order with no rips or tears to note. The red-stitched Momo steering wheel presents absolutely as new, and the matching gear knob is similarly unworn.
 

The centre console is equipped with a desirable Mitsubishi three gauge unit, providing the driver with valuable feedback on battery voltage, oil temperature, and boost pressure. The rear seats are unmarked, as are the carpets, which are protected in the footwells by a set of Ralliart branded overmats. A WRC roof hatch has been professionally fitted at some point in the car's life, allowing additional ventilation when open. The rear luggage compartment features a carbon strut brace and is also finished with a Ralliart mat.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The mighty two-litre DOHC turbocharged engine produces 276hp from the factory and rockets the Lancer from 0-60 in well under five seconds. This examples benefits from an HKS Silent Power Exhaust and HKS Super SQV blow-off valve (fitted by SVA Imports, Kent). The engine bay presents in excellent condition, and is one of the cleanest of the Evo VI's we have seen here at 4 Star.
 

The five-speed manual gearbox still feels tight, and the all-wheel-drive system provides enough confidence to power though corners at speed. Despite its high-performance credentials, the Evo VI still drives with typical Japanese-car ease; operating smoothly at low speeds before launching into ferocious acceleration at anything above 4000 rpm.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on its original set of 17-inch Enkei wheels in white. All four alloys are in fantastic condition with zero curb marking or age-related wear to speak of. They are shod in a matching set of tyres, each with plenty of tread remaining. On test the Brembo brakes perform effortlessly, stopping the car quickly and in a straight line. The rear discs and pads were replaced at 79,039 miles.

HISTORY FILE

The Lancer was first registered in March 2000. It resided in the dry climate of Japan until early 2015 when it was imported to the UK by SVA Imports Ltd, Kent. The car was subsequently purchased by its current keeper, and has been meticulously cared for ever since.
 

In August 2015 at 78,464 miles the car received a full service that included all fluids, spark plugs, plus timing and balance shaft belts. At this time an HKS exhaust and blow-off valve were fitted. It was serviced again in December 2015, July 2016, and March 2017.
