BMW 320 1982

Allmän beskrivning : A remarkable E21 320, with less than 25k miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

The BMW E21 was the original BMW 3-Series automobile. Produced from 1975 to 1983 this was BMW's first attempt at a compact executive car and a natural successor to the popular 2002.
 

In an attack on Mercedes led by Herbert Quandt, a new 51% shareholder, the E21 3-series made up the front line next to the new 5, 6 and 7-series, and as such began the uniform look amongst the model range, with the front of the cars dominated by the trademark kidney grill protruding clearly from the radiator cover.
 

To draw clear visual distinction within the new model series, the 320 models came with dual headlights, while the 316 and 318 had single round headlights. At its release the 320 model utilised the M10 4-cylinder engine, then as part of the ongoing evolution from 1978 it was replaced by the new six-cylinder 2-litre M20 engine and a Solex 4-barrel downdraft carburetor, known now as the 320/6.
 

The smooth 6-cylinder engine was credited to Paul Rosche, a BMW engineer from 1957 to 1999 who had already produced the mighty 6-cylinder engine of the M1 and 2-litre M10 engine in the 2002 turbo.
 

The suspension incorporated rack and pinion steering, McPherson strut suspension at the front and semi-trailing arm type independent suspension at the rear. The standard gearbox was a getrag 4-speed manual with an option for a 5-speed manual, or the ZF 3 HP-22 three-speed automatic.

EXTERIOR

Finished in Sapphire Blue metallic, the E21 presents remarkably well and is in near time warp condition. It has spent a very limited time on the road having only covered 24,860 miles in its lifetime. As such the structural condition of the car is perfect with no signs of any corrosion to the paint.
 

The bodywork is in excellent condition, as is all the chrome detailing and plastic trim. Furthermore, all panels remain incredibly straight aside from one or two very minor dings, with every lens crystal clear and crack-free as well.

INTERIOR

The car has a wonderful original interior that is pretty much like new. There are no signs of any wear in any of the usual places, such as the front seats, which are immaculate.
 

The carpets throughout are in very good shape, as are the door cards, which present without any scuffs or scrapes. The dashboard too is free from any fading or damage, and the rear seats appear to have never been sat in; the rear luggage compartment is equally pristine.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The two-litre engine is super smooth and pulls well, which is unsurprising given the low mileage. The engine bay presents well with a nice patina, consistent with a well-maintained car of a certain age.
 

The automatic gearbox is a pleasure to work, changing through the gears smoothly and without complaint.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This E21 is equipped with the optional 13-inch light alloy sports rims, all of which are in near-flawless condition, with only the tiniest amount of age-related wear to note; certainly no cause for refurbishment.
 

The wheels are shod in a matching set of Continental tyres, each with ample tread remaining.

HISTORY FILE

First registered on 17th June 1982 by Sytner of Nottingham this 320 has clearly been used sparingly, having covered a mere 25k miles. In that time, however, the car has been fully-serviced at close mileage intervals and features seven stamps in the dealer-supplied service booklet. The all-important running-in inspection was carried out by BMW at 1,497 miles, and the cambelt was replaced at 18,542 miles.
 

Present in the history file is the original book pack, featuring all the supplied manuals and many old tax discs. There are also numerous invoices for works carried out over the years, tons of old MOT certificates, plus an original sales brochure.
