BMW 525 525i Sport 1994

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The E34 was the third generation of BMW 5-Series, which was sold from 1988 to 1996. It was launched as a saloon but the range expanded in 1990 to include the Touring (estate) body style. The E34 was replaced by the E39 in 1995, although E34 Touring models remained in production until 1996.

There was an unusually large range of engines fitted over the E34’s lifetime, as nine different engine families were used. These consisted of four-cylinder, straight-six, and V8 engines. The 525i, as featured here, was equipped with a 6-cylinder engine. Like the 520i, the 525i was initially powered by the M20 engine, which was later updated to the M50 and M50TU engines. The 525i was the most popular E34 model globally, with 566,573 units produced.

All official Sport models came factory fitted with aerodynamic M Technic body styling consisting of M front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and an M Technic rear boot spoiler. In addition to this they also came factory fitted with the following standard equipment; cloth or leather BMW sports seats – leather trim was a £1,079 optional extra – an M Technic steering wheel, limited-slip differential, 30mm lower M Technic sports suspension manufactured by Boge/Bilstien, a close ratio 5-speed manual gearbox or the switchable automatic transmission (a £1,860 optional extra), shadowline tail pipe trim, chrome exterior trim or shadowline trim (a £389 cost option), and 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, although the very earliest Sport models came with larger 415mm BBS forged TRX alloys with metric tyres.

Exterior

The Cosmos Black colour scheme looks fantastic paired with the aggressive M Sport body styling and purposeful rear spoiler; benefitting from a full detail the paint retains a deep, lustful shine. The car is nice and straight along both sides and is completely free from any corrosion in any of the normal E34 weak spots, such as the bottom of the doors, sills, etc; the only imperfections to note being some lacquer peel on the rear bumper and around the sunroof. The black plastic trims and seals are very tidy all round and the lights are without any moisture damage. The underside is a real treat being completely rust-free, a rare site for any 24-year-old car.

Interior

The interior has stood the test of time really well. The fully electric M Sport seats remain in excellent condition with no cracks, wear, or fading to the black bison leather. The glossy dark wood inlays set the cabin off very nicely and everything remains just as it left the factory, including the BMW cassette radio and CD changer. Other nice options include air conditioning and an electric sunroof. The carpets are like new and are protected with an immaculate set of original BMW overmats. The boot area is equally clean, the spare wheel is present, and the toolkit is complete.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet reveals a very tidy engine bay, with no signs of corrosion to any of the inner panels or engine components, and the original protective lacquer can still be seen. Being a face-lifted E34 this example benefits from the improved silky-smooth 24-valve M50 engine, which stills runs like a dream having only driven 73k miles from new. The car has been well maintained throughout its life and is accompanied by a comprehensive service record present in the original maintenance booklet.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The factory 15-inch alloys are all in very tidy original condition having never required refurbishment, although a perfectionist may note some minor chips to upon close inspection. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Bridgestone tyres and on test the brakes perform well, pulling the car up quickly and in a straight line.

History File

The 525i was first registered in October 1994. The original maintenance booklet is present with the car and contains eleven entries. The car will also be freshly serviced at the current mileage for the new keeper’s peace of mind. The MOT is valid until August 2019.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, allmänt känt som BMW, har en rik historia som sträcker sig tillbaka till grundandet 1916.
