BMW Z8 1998

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The M roadster was first unveiled at the 1996 Geneva motor show, though production did not begin until later that year. It was designed as the performance version of the BMW Z3, and there were significant differences between the two variants. These included front and rear bumpers, gills, boot and mirrors. Under the skin many of the components were beefed up with the rear suspension being derived from the E30 M3 and the front suspension and brake system being taken from the E36 M3 Evo. Based on the E36 platform, the Z3 Roadster was known internally as the E36/7. The M Roadster could run a wider track under the flared wheel arches as well as wider wheels and tyres to try to tame the increased power. A dual exhaust system fed each set of three cylinders to two dual tailpipes. The Z3 M roadster was the first BMW to feature this quad exhaust design, which has since become a BMW M division signature.

The interior had a different look to the standard Z3. The sport package M-version steering wheel was standard on the M, and there was different instrumentation such as an oil temperature gauge. Finally, the car was available in M-specific colors, which were not released for the regular Z3, at least in the early production years (not counting BMW's Individual program).

Exterior

Those voluptuous Evergreen curves look marvelous under our studio lighting. The dazzling paintwork remains in fine order with no lacquer peel or corrosion to be found whatsoever. On close inspection there are almost no stone chips to the front bumper or bonnet, with areas such as the wing mirrors and flared arches also free from any chips or dings. Furthermore, all black trim and chrome detailing is in excellent condition.

Interior

The two-tone Nappa leather sports seats are in super condition and remain free from any sagging or damage, still feeling firm and supportive. The smart Black and Evergreen combination is carried through to the door cards and centre console, all of which is in fine order with no scuffs or marks. The carpets are perfectly clean throughout and are protected in the footwells by a set of black overmats showing almost no signs of wear. The boot area also remains spotlessly clean.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Being an earlier example, this M Roadster is equipped with the stunning S50 engine that produces an impressive 317hp. With no kind of electronic traction or stability control system, it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. The S50 engine can be identified by the "BMW M Power" inscription on its cam cover, while the later S54 motor contains only the "M" badge.

The ZF Type C 5-speed manual gearbox remains feeling tight and precise when shifting through the gears, handling the engine's power perfectly. The car has been well maintained from new, and has been serviced at very close mileage intervals despite only covering a mere 22k miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 17-inch five-spoke M RoadStar alloys are presented in the correct Chromeline finish. The deep rear dish gives the car a very broad, aggressive stance. With only a handful of discreet marks between them, the wheels are in fine order with fresh-looking centre caps and M Power badges.

They alloys are shod in a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres with plenty of tread remaining. The brakes also feel strong and confident, bringing the car to a standstill quickly and smoothly.

History File

The Z3 was first registered in October 1998. Residing on salt-free roads up until its recent import has meant the car has been extremely well preserved. The history file is complete with original BMW book pack with all the dealer-supplied manuals. The recorded service history is as follows:

Bayerische Motoren Werke, allmänt känt som BMW, har en rik historia som sträcker sig tillbaka till grundandet 1916. Ursprungligen etablerat som en flygmotortillverkare under första världskriget, ställdes BMW inför restriktioner när det gällde flygplansproduktion efter kriget. BMW tävlade med 328 i olika racingevenemang, inklusive det prestigefyllda Mille Miglia, där företaget introducerade flera aerodynamiska specialmodeller.

Mot slutet av 1970-talet introducerades BMW E24 6-serien och erbjöd en kombination av lyx och prestanda. 6-serien inkluderade modeller som 630CS, 633CSi och 635CSi och blev en symbol för sofistikering och körglädje.
