Chevrolet Suburban 350 V8 1949

Allmän beskrivning : 1949 Chevrolet Suburban - Clam Shell Model You have just stumbled across not only a rare classic but one of the coolest west coast Cali style customs out there.  The car is owned by a renowned car collector/builder and this Suburban is the result of what he appreciates about the east LA style of low rider which incorporates a custom hotrod look with the ability to travel long distances comfortably.  The 49 Chevy Suburban body and frame was acquired in Nevada off of the military proving ground through an auction.  It was without the fenders, engine, trim, and seats at the time but the body was totally rust free.  It was cleaned and stripped to bare metal inside and out prior to paint.  A self etching primer and filler coat were applied and along with hours of blocking and sanding smoothed the body out to be the perfect canvas.  In fact, the car looked so perfect after the primer/sealer was applied that the primer color was matched in a PPG single stage Concept urethane paint.  5 coats were applied and it was color sanded and buffed out to a stunning finish.  With so many windows you can bet there is a lot of trim which proved to be a big project on this car.  All of the side window trim was carefully removed, rust repaired, straightened and chromed.  Deluxe front window trim and side door trim was stainless which has been polished out and chromed to match the side trim.  All of the interior window garnish was chromed as well.  The fender chrome strips are all stainless and were an option only on the deluxe panel trucks.  The front grill guard and window visor are original NOS that were never used/installed and dealer offered accessories for this year of Suburban.  All of the glass is in excellent shape as are the weatherstripping, etc.  Steel wheels with Chevrolet dog dish hubcaps are in place and wrapped with wide white wall tires.  Keeping with the low rider theme, the engine compartment was kept very simple and free of any bolt on aftermarket catalog items.  The firewall has been filled and detailed out along with the side panels prior to the fresh crate 350 V8 being installed.  The motor is fitted with a single two barrel Rochester 2GC carb, intake manifold, Chevy script valve covers and a stock oil bath air cleaner that has been converted to a dry paper element.  The quality of workmanship is apparent even in small features like the valve covers which are painted a commercial Gray and then clear coated.  The radiator is a custom aluminum unit built by Air Mobil and utilizes a custom made aluminum shroud, mechanical fan, and electric pusher fan that is operated with an automatic switch when the AC system is in use.  The original frame was retained and a 1974-1978 Chevelle front steer sub frame installed along with the original Chevelle disc brakes and power steering unit.  The steering column is out of a Cadillac and is both tilt and telescoping.  A special machined hub was built to be able to attach a custom Lecarra steering wheel with the original Suburban horn button.  In the rear of the car you will find a 10 bolt Chevy positraction unit with a 4.10 to 1 gear ratio.  This pairs perfectly with the 700R4 automatic transmission and is matched to the weight of the car.  The transmission was completely rebuilt and a shift kit was installed with a 2400 rpm lock up converter and Bowtie kick down unit.  The rear suspension is a 4 bar system with diagonal cross link bar and is set up for airbags.  The frame was c-notched for clearance when the vehicle is in the lower position.  A Rock Valley 15 gallon stainless fuel tank was added and the exterior fill spout is only for looks because the tank had to be repositioned due to the four link suspension.  The air bag system is designed to lower the car from it driving position when parked with the electrical solenoid switches located near the steering column.  Each bag is independent of the other and operated from its corresponding switch and pressure gauge needle.  The system consists of two 480 Viaire compressors, two 5 gallon pressure tanks, 2 12 volt solenoids at each bag position, 3/8 inch nylon tubing and air ride brass fittings.  The air system electrical is separated from the car electrical and on its own terminal board.  Air ride is a beautiful thing when done right and this system was built with only the best.    The interior utilizes original Suburban seats with the original style vinyl.  All of the seats were rebuilt with new padding and kept very basic.  All of the seat fasteners were chromed and kept in the original located to accept a third seat if desired.  The original plywood floor was in such good condition that they were maintained and refinished with a marine resin and clear coat prior to being sanded and buffed.  There are five coats of clear on the wood and if you ever get undesired scuff marks or scratches they sand and buff out easily.  No headliner is in place but the cieling was insulated with DynaMat sound dedener and primed.  Below the radiator air operated train horns were added and are very effective when operated by the push button on the dash.  The windshield wiper motor is a 12 volt electric unit with a switch mounted in the original position.  The AC system is a Hot Rod air/heat unit mounted under the dash to keep with the old school look while providing high tech reliability.  The original AM radio has been reconditioned with a new speaker installed.  Where AM is available it works well but an additional entertainment system was installed with a tuner/CD/IPOD unit mounted in the glove compartment.  It works very well with a 1200 watt amp and 10 inch bass speaker which is located under the back seat.  The amp unit is located under the drivers seat in the original tool box location and the vehicle has 4 speakers mounted in all four corners in custom enclosures.  Last summer the car cruised to New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah where it performed very well.  It was flawless throughout the entire trip and made a very comfortable vehicle for travel due to its extra room.  Off the road the Suburban proved to be very popular at car shows and people seem to enjoy its unique style.  If you are ready for a classic that can take you anywhere while being incredibly unique this Suburban fits the bill.  Odds are you
