General description :
Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1936 3 ½ Litre Park Ward Sports Saloon Derby Bentley For Sale.
This iconic pre-war Bentley known as ‘The Silent Sports Car” certainly lives up to it’s name with a lovely smooth running engine and being a F series model is arguably the best of the 3 ½ ‘s . On the road the handling is superb, holding the road and allowing trouble free motoring.
This fine example has been in the family ownership for the last 16 years, restored by the current owners father 15 years ago. His late father originally worked as a coachbuilder for Park Ward, so as you can imagine all the lines, gaps and curves are exactly as they should be.
He finished the car in Silver over Maroon, a striking colour combination completed to an applaudable standard, this Park Ward Sports Saloon immediately catches your eye and you driving past you.
The interior has been completed to the same standard as the outside, finished in fluted red leather, and red carpet with leather piping on the floor and lower doors. We are proud to have such a lovely finished car in our showroom.
After a period of reflection and prevarication, Rolls-Royce decided that a sportier version of their 20/25 model could establish a niche for itself in the marketplace as a luxury sports tourer.
Having explored various options, it was decided to power the new 'Bensport' with a more highly tuned version of the 20/25 unit - a six cylinder, pushrod engine fitted with twin S/U carburettors, increased compression, improved con rods and modified cam profiles, with a capacity of 3,669cc.
Built at Derby alongside Rolls-Royce and launched in September as the 3½ litre Bentley, this car possessed excellent handling characteristics and could achieve a top speed of 97mph when fitted with lightweight bodywork.
However, like all products designed under the influence of Sir Henry Royce, it was imbued with some of the most complicated design solutions for any car of the period. Nevertheless, it caught on and proved immensely popular without affecting sales of its parent marque. Very soon, this new Bentley was christened 'The Silent Sports Car' - a name it is still closely associated with.
1936 Bentley 3 1/2 Litre 3 1/2 Litre Park Ward Sports Saloon is listed sold on ClassicDigest in Grays by Vintage Prestige for £86000.

Before becoming a mere subsidiary to Rolls-Royce, Bentley was an independent Automaker famous for the "fastest lorries in the world" e.i Bentley 4½ Litre.
Good ol' Bentley boys (A group of wealthy British motorists, mainly Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, S.C.H. "Sammy" Davis, and Dr Dudley Benjafield ) -in their trusty Bentley cars- took four consecutive victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930
In 1931 Bentley was taken over British Central Equitable Trust that later proved to be a front for Rolls-Royce Limited. Unhappy with his role at Rolls-Royce, W.O. Bentley left the company when his contract expired in 1935 duly joining Lagonda. This was beginning of which ultimately led Bentley cars to become more or less badge-engineered Rolls-Royce.
