Exterior

Defying both its years and mileage this rare UK M635 CSi presents in excellent unrestored condition. The Polaris Metallic paintwork is bright and glossy with a uniform shine and no off-colour panels. Being an earlier E24 this one is equipped with attractive chrome bumpers, both with a mirror shine. Elsewhere around the car all the black plastics and rubbers remain in fine fettle with no sun damage or marking, including the rear spoiler which is also still notably soft. On arrival with us the underside of the car was inspected and was found to be in very solid original condition. All in all, a highly collectable non-catalyst example and one of only 524 ever produced in right-hand drive.

Interior

Open the door and you’re greeted by comfortable and supportive Recaro sports seats trimmed in black leather. Both have worn well and other than some expected wrinkling and light surface wear, the bolsters are excellent and free from damage. The M Technic steering wheel is also in great original condition with only light patination to the rim, and the adjacent switchgear is perfect. Having always been carefully stored out of the sun there are no cracks on the dash and the headlining is spotless. Spec’d from new with the desirable air conditioning option we’re pleased to report that the system blows ice cold having benefitted from a new condenser and fan back in 2021.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Looking under the bonnet is a real treat for any 80s BMW enthusiast. At the heart of the M635 CSi is the lauded M1-derived M88 straight-six which in this case was recently serviced less than 100 miles ago. The engine bay remains in great shape, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition just as you’d expect for a low mileage unrestored example. For additional peace of mind the car was treated to a full engine rebuild only 10k miles ago. This work was carried out by leading marque specialists Munich Legends and cost in excess of £7k in 2007.

History File

At 38 years old, and unlike most E24s that have covered over 100k miles, this stunning M635 reads just 89k miles from new. A rare UK right-drive car it was supplied to its first owner by Harry Fairbairn BMW in February 1986. The low mileage is well documented in the accompanying paperwork which comprises the original BMW document wallet, the fully stamped service booklet (entries below), a thick raft of invoices and MOT certificates dating back to 1989, a 2022 issue of Classic and Sports Car magazine where the car was featured, a spare key, and the V5C showing only 3 former keepers.

About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
