Ford Escort 1985

General description : Ford Escort RS Turbo S1

This 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1 is a left-hand-drive example that was sold new in Finland. Just 5,000 Series 1 RS Turbos were built worldwide and not many as a LHD.

The RS Turbo S1 model features an exterior graphics package, alloy wheels, cloth Recaro seats, and a limited-slip differential.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.6L inline-four paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. This example was fitted with a larger turbocharger and additional performance modifications years ago, though it is now closer to stock specification aside from an aftermarket exhaust, auxiliary gauges, and a Pioneer CD player. The engine is not standard though and performs very well, 185hp.

Nearly all of the Escort RS Turbos built worldwide were painted white with blue decals as seen here. The rear valence is showing evidence of prior repairs and paintwork, and it also appears that the body may have been repainted in the past, though the graphics have since faded. Cosmetic blemishes are highlighted in the photo gallery, including missing paint on the rear spoiler, some bubbles and rust, various chips and scuffs, and a crack in the windshield.

The RS Turbo S1 came standard with alloy wheels shared with the limited-production RS 1600i.

Cloth-covered Recaro front seats feature blue piping and show some wear on the driver’s outer bolstering, along with small tears on the passenger-side inner bolstering.

A Pioneer in-dash CD player was added by a previous owner along with aftermarket gauges displaying boost and the air/fuel mixture. As shown in pictures, the dashboard is cracked in multiple areas. Factory equipment includes a sunroof, three-spoke steering wheel, and power windows. The five-digit odometer indicates 21,600 kilometers (~13k miles), with total mileage unknown.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6L inline-four, which developed approximately 130 horsepower when new, this has just been run on the dyno and is producing 185hp. A modified exhaust system is installed, and power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and factory limited-slip differential. It has had recent servicing included a new cam belt, brakes, and gearbox maintenance, no records are present for the work apart from photos.

This is a great car to drive and keeps up with most modern cars, even at high speeds it feels very safe and smooth.

It wouldn’t take much to restore this car back to top condition, then you would have a valuable and rare car.

I challenge you to try and find another LHD RS Turbo S1 for sale, if you do, I would be very surprised.

Please let me know if you have any questions or require more photos.

About Ford
Ford, founded in 1902, has arguably changed the history of automotive world more than any other car manufacturer by introducing the first people's car Model T in 1908. They had produced more than 15 million cars by the end of the production in 1927, by which T had become obsolete.

Ford launched the first low priced V8 engine powered car in 1932. 1932 V8 was an instant hit with superior handling and performance to many far more expansive cars of the day. No wonder 32 V8 Ford has become such a favourite among hot rodders around the world with 32 Deuce coupe as their icon.

During the war Ford completely shut down civilian vehicle production to dedicate all its resources to the Allied war efforts (1942-45) They used to build B-24 bombers, aircraft engines, jeeps, M-4 tanks, military trucks and Bren-gun carriers and more than 30,000 super-charged Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines for Mosquito and Lancaster bombers as well as P-51 Mustang fighters. After the war Ford cars in the USA got bigger and flashier along with their competitors. In the 60's Ford was back in the forefront again when introducing their commercial hit Mustang in 1964. Mustang was so popular the competition had to follow Ford's example and the ponycar phenomenon took over the US. Over the years the ponies grew some muscles until the oil crisis kill finally killed them off.

In the sixties Ford rushed into international motor sports scene with a fury. After unsuccessful Ferrari takeover, when Enzo Ferrari had cut the deal off with Henry Ford II making the latter absolutely boil with fury, Ford turned to Lola in UK to produce a Ferrari beating long distance racer after. The collaboration between Ford and Lola created the mighty Ford GT40 that absolutely beat Ferrari in Le Mans 24 numerous times.

In Europe, Ford introduced some of the most epic race and rally cars of the 60's based on humble family sedans; Cortina GT, Lotus Cortina, Escort Twin Cam, and Escort 1600RS with the iconic Cosworth BDA engines.

Today classic Fords are extremely popular with enthusiasts and a great selection of classic Fords can be found for sale at www.ClassicDigest.com
