Mercury Cougar 390 FE BBF V8 1967

General description : This 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT is for sale in our Louisville KY showroom. This beautiful piece of automotive art was a California car for most of it life. The current owner bought the Cougar in 2010 and got a little crazy with the build. A full rotisserie restoration was began, but the restoration was not intended to bring this Cougar back to factory original, but to make it something nicer, that any true Hot Rodder or Gear Head could appreciate. To insure this cat would be a better handling car than when new, a Total Cost Suspension was added. It consists of removing the shock towers and upgrading to a complete coil over suspension. Wilwood disc brakes have also been added to all four corners. This 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT is powered by its 390 FE CID V8 Engine and is backed by a C6 3-speed automatic transmission. The 390 V8 has been upgraded with Edelbrock aluminum heads, aluminum intake, a roller cam, full length ceramic headers with stainless steel exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers. The ignition system has been upgraded with MSD components, so the 500 hp 390 FE gets all the sparks it needs. To keep this high horsepower V8 cool, an aluminum radiator with dual electric fans has been installed. The C6 automatic transmission has been upgraded using TCI Street Fighter components. Finishing off the drive line is a Ford 9 inch rear end upgraded with Richmond Power Trax Grip Pro with 3.89 gears. The Cougar has been repainted to its original factory color, Inverness Green. The XR7 GT has all new chrome and trim thank s a complete West Coast Classic Cougar chrome package. The old sequential tail lights are upgraded to digital units so they will be rock solid reliable for years to come. The front hideaway headlight doors have also upgraded to electric pieces, so you’ll never have to deal with a lazy eyed Cougar. The hood scoop has been molded into the hood and a set of billet hood hinges have been added. Finishing off the exterior is a set of 17” Eleanor style wheels with Sumitomo Radial tires. The interior consists of the original dash and door panels, but as with the rest of the cat, there upgrades here as well. The seats, carpet, headliner is new, and an Ididit steering column has added. The Cougar has a full Marti Report to go with it, along with tons of receipts from the owner. In his own words, “you couldn’t build the car for the asking price”, so reap the fruits of labor, before someone else makes this cat their new prized pet! Options on this 1967 Mercury Cougar XR7 GT include; AM/FM radio with CD player, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Seat Belts, and Rally Wheels wrapped in Radial Tires. About Mercury
Mercury, the automotive brand, has a rich history that extends beyond its role in the customization and hot-rodding scene, particularly with the iconic Mercury Eight. Here are some key points to know about Mercury:

Formation and Early Years:
Mercury was introduced by the Ford Motor Company in 1938 as a mid-priced brand, positioned between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. The brand aimed to fill the gap between these two segments.
Mercury Eight:
The Mercury Eight, launched in 1939, is perhaps the most famous model in the brand's history. It featured a sleek design and a powerful V8 engine. This model became popular for customization and hot-rodding, earning it a significant place in American automotive culture.
Customization Culture:
The Mercury Eight, with its distinctive styling and relatively affordable price, became a favorite among custom car builders. It played a pivotal role in the development of the custom car and hot rod culture, particularly in the post-World War II era.
Lead Sleds and Customization:
The term "lead sled" is often associated with heavily customized cars from the 1940s and 1950s. These cars, including the Mercury Eight, were often modified with lowered suspensions, chopped roofs, and other stylistic changes. Lead sleds were a prominent part of the custom car scene, and the Mercury Eight was a popular choice for such modifications.
Post-War Prosperity:
In the post-World War II period, Mercury, like many other American automakers, experienced a surge in popularity as the economy boomed. The brand contributed to the era's fascination with stylish and powerful automobiles.
Evolution of Models:
Over the years, Mercury continued to produce various models, contributing to Ford's lineup. Some notable models include the Mercury Monterey, Mercury Comet, and Mercury Cougar.
Decline and Discontinuation:
Despite periods of success, Mercury faced challenges in establishing a unique identity separate from Ford. As consumer preferences shifted, the brand struggled, and Ford eventually announced the discontinuation of Mercury in 2010.
Legacy in Popular Culture:
Mercury, especially models like the Mercury Eight, holds a significant place in American popular culture. Its association with the customization and hot-rodding scene, as well as its distinctive designs, has left a lasting impact.
In summary, while the Mercury Eight is celebrated for its role in the customization and hot-rodding subculture, Mercury as a brand played a broader role in automotive history, contributing to mid-priced segments and reflecting the automotive trends of its time.
