1987 Porsche 928 S4 Incredibly Low Mileage For Sale In London (LHD)

The second of the famous transaxle cars, the 928 was conceived at a time when Porsche was at a crossroads. The 911 had already been in production for over a decade and Porsche were looking to introduce a model to represent the future with an of Porsche and ultimately replace the 911. This car was to be the 928. A thoroughly modern and futuristic car in every way, the 928 was a stark contrast to the 911. It was front-engined with a smooth V8, more comfortable, quiet and far more refined than the 911. It was the first car to feature 4-wheel steering, an astonishing feat considering this was in 1977! Ferraris for example have only just started to use this technology with the Ferrari F12 tdf yet the 928 was doing this 40 years ago. And so, in 1977 the 928 was debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and later released in 1978 to critical acclaim. It won the prestigious title of European Car of the Year in 1978 and is to this day the only sports car to have ever won that award. A true testament to the 928’s brilliance and unrivalled engineering.

It was decided prior to the 928s release that the 911 would remain in production and be simply retooled due to its huge success and large fanbase. The 928 on the other hand would be a more upmarket option, a luxury Grand Tourer, to appeal to the elite who preferred luxury cars to analogue sports cars. Despite the emphasis on comfort and practicality, the 928 was always a very fast car. It was faster than any of its 911 contemporaries throughout its production run all the way up to the Porsche 911 964 Turbo.

Built to the highest standards at Porsche’s iconic Stuttgart plant, the 928 saw a lengthy production run which lasted from 1977 to 1995 and thanks to its unique and superb design by Wolfgang Möbius and Anatole Lapine, the 928 managed to always look brand new and it improved with age like a fine wine. The 928’s graceful aging process was vastly helped by the S4 facelift which was arguably the best looking generation of 928 with cleaner lines and more elegant foglamps and rear lights.

The 928 S4 was introduced in 1987 and was to remain as the design basis for all subsequent 928 models, including the GT and the GTS. It was a huge success and led to a major boost in sales, surpassing the sales of its predecessor the S2 and nearly reaching the numbers of the original 928. Performance also grew and the figures were astonishing to say the least. The engine was now a 5.0 V8 with 316BHP, strong numbers for the time. The combination of the excellent V8 and the sleek aerodynamic body pushed the S4 to an astonishing top speed of 171MPH with a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds. These figures are considerable by today’s standards, let alone in 1987 which put the performance of the 928 at a level only spitting distance away from supercars such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack, the Ferrari Testarossa and the Lamborghini Countach. These unbelievable statistics were only added to by the relative affordability of the Porsche which cost an equivalent to £31,000 in today’s money at base which was quite a bit more affordable than its exotic rivals. Few other cars could offer these figures with the levels of comfort and practicality of the 928. Not to mention that this was only the performance of the standard car with other variants like the Club Sport, the GT and GTS all reaching even higher performance levels.

This incredible example is one of the very the best 928s money can buy, let alone an S4. It is in true time-warp condition and has covered a mere 13,000 miles or 21,000 kilometres, making it the lowest mileage S4 we’ve ever seen and one of the top few lowest mileage 928s available. Climbing into the incredibly comfortable black leather seats takes you back in time to the late 80s, a feeling only intensified by the relics of the era which can be found in this magnificent car. Vintage road maps of Germany, Switzerland and Montpellier, France can be found in the surprisingly large door pockets along with brochures featuring helicopter rentals etc. The car also retains a collection of classic cassette tapes such as Michael Jackson’s Bad and even Now That’s What I Call Music 10. If that doesn’t take you back to a cooler time, I don’t know what does, cruising along with Crockett’s Theme blaring out of the original and fully functioning Blaupunkt Radio. Everything works in the interior including each of the 8-Motor seats, the radio as aforementioned, the windows, the electric boot release, electric sliding sunroof and everything else.

This is a truly stunning, one-owner car with unparalleled mileage and a real nostalgic ambience. We have no doubt that this is truly one of the very best 928s on the market and should not be missed. For any Porsche collector or fan of the 928, this is the best S4 out there. Few cars of the period can match the 928 in terms of usability and presence.

About Porsche 928
he Porsche 928 was a grand tourer sports car introduced by Porsche in 1977. While the car was highly regarded for its performance and handling, it's fair to say that it was not the right car for the time of its launch, at least in terms of market demand.

At the time of the 928's launch, there was a growing demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars due to the oil crisis of the 1970s. The 928 was a large, V8-powered sports car that was not particularly fuel-efficient, and its high price tag made it less accessible to many buyers.

Furthermore, the 928 was also a departure from Porsche's traditional sports car design, featuring a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout instead of the classic rear-engine layout of the iconic 911. While the 928 was highly regarded for its performance and handling, some enthusiasts felt that it didn't quite capture the essence of a true Porsche sports car.

Despite these challenges, the Porsche 928 managed to gain a loyal following over the years, thanks to its combination of performance, handling, and luxury features. The car underwent a number of updates and revisions over its production run, and it remained in production until 1995.

Overall, while the Porsche 928 may have been the wrong car for the time of its launch in terms of market demand, it remains an important part of Porsche's history and a classic example of the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering.
