BMW 318 316 1987

General description : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry-level luxury car, the E30 3-Series spanned 12 years of production. Replacing the E21 chassis in 1982 and overlapping its successor the E36, introduced in 1990, by 4 years.

Early models featured the 4-pot M10 and inline-6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 engine replaced with the M40 engine again utilising motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or coloured ones in late ‘89 with the rear light clusters made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now referred to as pre-facelift (with chrome bumpers) and facelift (plastic bumpers).

The E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight. This was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first three series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

Equipment

Cinnabar Red paintwork, Anthracite velour upholstery, 5-speed manual transmission, 14-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, Pioneer cassette radio, Electric door mirrors, Four-spoke steering wheel, Remote central locking, Alarm, Immobiliser, Original BMW overmats, BMW toolkit, BMW torch, Supplying dealer number plates.

Exterior

This lovely chrome bumper E30 is finished in one of our favourite BMW colours of the era, Zinnoberrot (Cinnabar Red). The body is very well presented throughout and having no doubt seen some light remedial paintwork over the years there are relatively few chips and defects to note. On arrival with us the car was treated to a full machine polish to correct any swirl marks resulting in a deep glossy shine throughout. Looking along both sides the panels are straight and true, and the original chrome still presents with a great lustre all round. Having always been carefully stored away from the elements the underside of the car is also notably fresh.

Interior

The interior space looks and feels as it must have done back in 1987. The anthracite velour seats are immaculately presented, and steering wheel, gear knob, and door cards are all perfect. Cast an eye over the dashboard and you'll notice a deep texture remains with none of the common E30 sun damage or cracking issues to report. Finer details such as the Pioneer cassette player and centre console switchgear are also without fault. Still protected by their original BMW overmats the footwell carpets remain in fine order, and looking above, the pale headlining is pristine. The rear seats appear to have never been sat in and aside from one small blemish on the carpet the boot area is pristine.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Barely run-in with only 20k miles under its belt the 1.8-litre engine is a free-revving little number which, despite its modest 88hp output, provides effortlessly smooth performance; paired with a slick 5-speed manual gearbox it’s a pleasure to drive. Lift the bonnet and you’re presented with a clean and tidy original engine bay, not overly dressed but in very sound unrestored condition – and with just the right level of patina in our opinion. On arrival with us the 316 was fully inspected by our trusted classic car specialists who were also rather impressed with the excellent condition of the underside. Notable recent works include a full re-commissioning in 2021 and the last service that was carried out in May 2023 just 45 miles ago.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E30 sits on desirable cross-spoke alloy wheels in excellent condition having previously been refurbished with all-new aluminium centre caps and BMW emblems. They are shod in a matching set of premium Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres with plenty of tread left at each corner. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition; new front pads and discs were fitted alongside a brake fluid change less than 150 miles ago.

History File

This wonderful pre-facelift, non-fuel injection E30 was first registered in September 1987. It was supplied new by Cotswold BMW in Cheltenham and has now driven a mere 20,895 miles in the hands of only 3 registered keepers. The original Cotswold BMW number plates and tax disc holder are still present with the car along with several other nice (and usually absent) items such as the BMW glovebox torch, original carpet mats, jack, wheel chock, touch-up pencil, etc.

Within the accompanying History File the lucky new owner will be presented with the original BMW document wallet with all owners’ manuals, the stamped service booklet, a raft of maintenance invoices including one for the car’s 2021 re-commissioning totalling in excess of £6,800, numerous tax discs and old MOT certificates, a spare remote fob, a period BMW tie and tie pin, and the V5C showing just 2 former keepers.

About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
