BMW 320 328i M Sport Cabriolet 2000

General description : Model History

The E36 3-Series was sold from 1991 to 1999. It was the successor to the E30 and was replaced by the E46 3-Series in 1998. This third generation of 3-Series was a very popular one. Its new design featured improved aerodynamics and featured the “Z-axle” multilink rear suspension, which had been proven in the Z1.

Although larger and heavier than the E30 – due to more active safety features being fitted – The E36 boasted a perfect 50:50 weight distribution; this was achieved by relocating the engine further back. For the six-cylinder models, the E36 was launched with the then-new M50 petrol engines. In 1995 the M52 engine replaced the M50, resulting in the 328i model replacing the 325i. The 2.8 was also the largest 3-series engine below that of the 3.0 M3, offering a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds when paired with the manual gearbox or 7.8 seconds with the silken five-speed auto.

Exterior

Avus Blue is one of the great E36 colours, looking superb against the Light Grey upholstery. The electric folding hood is also blue and presents in excellent original condition with absolutely no damage to the fabric or rear window. Looking along both sides the car is pin-sharp, the paintwork displaying a lovely deep shine throughout. All items of trim retain a smart black sheen free from any sun damage, and the headlights are crystal clear with no unsightly moisture ingress to note. Aerodynamic M Sport body styling completes the look and appears in amazing condition all round.

Interior

The Light Grey upholstery is extremely well presented throughout, remaining soft, supple, and free from any major wear to the deep bolsters. Pale leather extends to the door cards and rear panels while the dash and carpets are a darker, more forgiving shade of grey. On close inspection the carpets are really well preserved having always been protected in the footwells by the original velour overmats. There are no scratches to any of the delicate console trims or switchgear and the factory cassette radio still remains in place. The only non-standard item to report is a Hornet alarm system.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet you’ll find an immaculate engine bay with absolutely no signs of damage or poor repair. All of the plastic components still appear fresh and the inner panels retain a pristine painted finish. The 328i’s wonderful M52 straight-six has been well maintained throughout its life and was most recently serviced in February 2019 at Barons BMW. The BMW heath check has shown the car to be in excellent fettle throughout.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E36 sits on its original ‘Style 30’ Sport alloys that all present in great condition. There is some light curb marking to note up close but nothing too major. The original centre caps are still fitted and the tyres are matching all round with plenty of tread remaining. The brakes are also in fine fettle and perform well on test.

History File

This 328i was supplied to its first and only keeper in March 2000. All owners’ manuals are present and the service booklet is fully stamped at the following mileages: 8k, 16k, 22k, 31k, 41k, 51k, 57k, and most recently at 65k miles in February 2019. The MOT is valid until April 2020.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
