BMW 321 323i 1981

General description : A Henna Red 323i, manual with 97k miles.

MODEL HISTORY

The E21 was the original BMW 3-Series automobile. Produced from 1975 to 1983 this was BMW's first attempt at a compact executive car and a natural successor to the popular 2002.

In an attack on Mercedes led by Gunther Quandt, a new 51% shareholder, the E21 3-series made up the front line next to the new 5, 6 and 7 series and as such began the uniform look amongst the model range, the front of the cars dominated by the trademark kidney grill protruding clearly from the radiator cover.

The pick of the bunch for the driving enthusiast was the 323i featuring good build quality, a powerful straight six engine (143bhp and 145lb ft of torque) and rear wheel drive. This combination positioned it perfectly for the young budding executive looking for the right image with enough driver involvement until they could afford a 911!

The smooth six-cylinder engine was credited to Paul Rosche, a BMW engineer from 1957 to 1999 who had already produced the mighty six-cylinder engine of the M1 and 2-litre M10 engine in the 2002 turbo. He picked the largest engine possible that would fit in the engine bay with the first cylinder hidden under the dashboard.

The suspension incorporated rack and pinion steering, McPherson strut suspension at the front and semi-trailing arm type independent suspension at the rear. The 323i featuring disc brakes on all wheels. Early cars were sold with a 4-speed manual; later ones with a Getrag 5-speed manual as standard however this was offered as an option on early cars. Other options included a close ratio dogleg box, power steering and a 25% lock limited slip diff.

Equipment

Double halogen headlights, Front and rear disc brakes, 13-inch light alloy rims, Electric door mirrors, Sunroof, Sharp radio/cassette, Front and rear BMW mud flaps, Cigarette lighter, Ash trays, Lockable glove compartment, BMW toolkit, Alloy spare wheel.

EXTERIOR

The Henna Red paintwork looks marvelous against those classic E21 lines, and free from any modifications the car retains a handsome stock finish. The plentiful brightwork and rubber trim are in nice original condition but do present with a level of patina. The paintwork is also showing a few signs of age however the chassis rails in the engine bay (a common weak point for corrosion) are in great condition and have fought off the elements well over the last 35 years. The rear suspension turrets are also rust-free.

INTERIOR

The brown cloth interior presents really well. The front seats are in excellent condition, with only a few loose threads to note in the rear of the cabin. The carpets throughout are free from any rips or holes, and the dash shows no signs of any cracking or distortion. Furthermore, the steering wheel retains an excellent textured finish and the centre console is complete with a period Sharp cassette player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay appears in good order throughout, however, having been stored for the last fourteen or so years a degree of fettling will be required to bring the car up to scratch. Having said that, the 323 certainly pulls well through the gears, and is present with a clean MOT. It was most recently serviced in July this year.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E21 is equipped with the factory supplied 13-inch light alloy rims, which present in good order all round. Shod in a new set of tyres they are finished with the correct centre caps and show only minor signs of age-related wear. Being a 323i the car benefits from front and rear disc brakes, which perform well on test.

HISTORY FILE

The E21 was first registered on 21st May 1981 and has covered less than 98k miles since that time. It has remained under the same ownership for the last fourteen years but has been seldom used during that period. As such, this rare BMW is now offered for sale in the hope that its next keeper will enjoy a little fettling and return the car to its former glory.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
