BMW 325 328i Sport 1998

General description : Model History

The E36 3-Series was sold from 1991 to 1999. It was the successor to the E30 and was replaced by the E46 3-Series in 1998. This third generation of 3-Series was a very popular one. Its new design featured improved aerodynamics and featured the “Z-axle” multilink rear suspension, which had been proven in the Z1.

Although larger and heavier than the E30 – due to more active safety features being fitted – The E36 boasted a perfect 50:50 weight distribution; this was achieved by relocating the engine further back.

The 328i Sport was released in 1996. The two-door rear-wheel drive coupé was fitted with BMW’s sublime M52 2.8-litre straight-six engine. Like the M3, the Sport was developed in conjunction with BMW's high performance M Division. It boasted aerodynamic M body styling, M-tuned sports suspension, 17-inch BBS rims, twin exhaust tailpipes, and sports seats.

Exterior

This low mileage 328i Sport presents immaculately in gleaming Arctic Silver Metallic, a rarely specified colour with a subtle ice blue tint depending on the light. This one has clearly been cherished by each of its keepers as every aspect of the car is exceptional – in fact it’s hard to believe it’s actually 25 years old! The paintwork retains a deep and even shine with no scratches, dents, or off-colour panels. At the front end there are almost no stone chips to report and the lights are crystal-clear. Even finer details such as the window rubbers, door seals, rubbing strips, and badges appear as-new throughout. Undoubtedly one of the cleanest E36s we’ve seen here at 4 Star, looking every bit the low mileage of just 52k.

Interior

Opening the door you’re presented with a time-warp ‘90s interior boasting full leather upholstery and automatic air con. Sitting inside, the deeply bolstered sports seats still feel textured and soft, the leather remaining in excellent condition with no damage or wear to speak of. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and armrest also show few signs of use. The cabin is lifted further with glossy burr walnut trim, again all pristine and free from any lacquer damage. All the switchgear remains feeling solid to operate and everything works as it should. In the footwells you’ll find tailored BMW overmats, and in the rear the seats look brand new. The boot area is equally clean with no marks or stains on the carpet; the BMW toolkit is 100% complete and even the BMW first aid kit is still unopened in its original packaging.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

A real treat for the enthusiast, the engine bay is exceptionally clean and with absolutely no signs of any damage, corrosion, or previous poor repair. The plastic components look remarkably fresh and the only upgrade over standard is a K&N performance induction kit; the original air box is included with the car and could easily be re-fitted should the new keeper wish. The wonderful 2.8-litre M52 straight-six has been well maintained throughout its life and was most recently serviced at BMW in April 2021 at 50,527 miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 328i Sport’s stunning two-piece rims look incredible. Previously refurbished at great expense they are entirely kerb-free, and even the centre badges look new. They are wrapped in a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, all with at least 5mm of tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition.

History File

This magnificent example was first registered in March 1998. The accompanying History File comprises the original document wallet with all owners manuals, a raft of invoices including the original bill of sale, old MOT certificates, a fresh HPI check, an original sales brochure and price list, multiple spare keys, and the service book that’s stamped at the following mileages: 9,884 – 19,516 – 30,229 – 38,156 – 47,516 – 49,800 – and most recently at 50,527 miles.

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
