BMW 535 535i Sport 1990

General description : Model History

The E34 535i Sport was introduced to the UK market in 1989. It utilised the iconic M30 engine that has powered BMWs for 28 years starting in 1968 and included championship winning touring cars in the form of the E9 CSLs and the E24 coupes.

The E34 535i Sport had 211hp at 5,700 rpm and 225 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. This propelled the car from 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds via the five-speed manual Getrag gearbox.

All official UK Sport models came factory fitted with aerodynamic M Technic body styling consisting of M front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and an M Technic rear boot spoiler. In addition to this they also came factory fitted with the following standard equipment; cloth or leather BMW sports seats – leather trim was a £1,079 optional extra, an M Technic I steering wheel, limited-slip differential, 30mm lower M Technic sports suspension manufactured by Boge/Bilstien, a close ratio 5-speed manual gearbox or the switchable 4-speed ZF automatic transmission (a £1,860 optional extra), shadowline tail pipe trim, chrome exterior trim or shadowline trim (a £389 cost option), and 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, although the very earliest Sport models came with larger 415mm BBS forged TRX alloys with metric tyres.

Exterior

This stunning 535i Sport is finished in gorgeous Glacier Blue Metallic. The exterior appears in excellent condition; free from any dents or major scratches it truly defies its 28 years of age. On close inspection the rubbing strips and bumper plastics are all scuff-free and present beautifully. The chrome trim is also in fine fettle as are the lights front and rear, each remaining clear and without damage. A nice touch are the original dealer number plates that are still present with the car along with the complementing Barons rear window sticker.

Interior

The E34’s cabin is a lovely place to be. The superb Indigo Blue Leather sports seats are in exemplary condition and still boast full electrical functionality. The M Technic steering wheel and gear knob show no signs of heavy use and the leather is in wonderful condition. In the foot-wells the carpets are unmarked, and the boot area remains free from any stains. What’s more the car has never been smoked in, with all ashtrays remaining unused. The factory fitted Blaupunkt Montreaux cassette/radio completes the period aesthetic.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This example has covered a mere 79k miles and has a superb service history to back up the mileage; as you would expect it is in great mechanical order. The engine produces wonderfully smooth performance at speed and idles perfectly up to temperature. The close ratio five-speed manual gearbox still feels light and accurate shifting through the gears. Recent work carried out includes a service and a replacement clutch at 75k miles. New front Bilstein shocks and track rod ends were also fitted at this time.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on the desirable 415mm BBS forged TRX alloys. They remain in excellent condition throughout and are shod in matching Michelin TRX tyres all round, including the unmarked BBS spare. On test the front and rear brakes are in perfect working condition and require little effort to bring this super-saloon to a standstill.

History File

This 535i Sport was supplied new by Barons of Hindhead in May 1990. The car has had just two private keepers since that time, and the current owner purchased it from us back in 2013. It was initially serviced with BMW before being cared for by BMW specialists for the rest of its pampered life. The car was off the road from 2009 when it had covered 60,202 miles but was re-commissioned and inspected by MJF Engineering, a respected BMW specialist, in May 2013.

In addition to the stamped service book the car also boasts the leather document holder and manuals, the original bill of sale from Barons totaling £36,018, the original sales brochure complete with the salesman's business card, and the original options list with the selected options highlighted. The car was also featured in the August 2013 issue of BMW Car magazine, a copy of which is included in the history file. The service intervals are listed below.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
