BMW 535 535i 1986

General description : Model History

The E28 was the second generation of 5-Series, produced from 1981 to 1988 and replacing the E12. It was the first 5-Series with the option of anti-lock brakes (ABS) and to feature the centre console angled towards the driver. The E28 was initially produced with four and six-cylinder petrol engines, but with the introduction of the 524td in 1983, it was also the first BMW to be powered by a diesel engine.

The four models available at the launch of the E28 were the 518, 520i, 525i and 528i, all powered by petrol engines. Over the course of the E28 model, the following models were added: the 524d and 524td using diesel engines, the 518i (a fuel-injected version of the 518), the 525e/528e as fuel-economy models, and the upper-specification 533i, 535i, M535i, and M5 models.

The 535i – as featured here – was released in 1984 and used the same 6-cylinder drivetrain as the M535i. Over and above lesser models the 535i boasted some tasty additional equipment; this included sports-tuned suspension, a limited-slip diff with 25% locking action, M-Technic cast light-alloy wheels, ornamental pinstripes, wheel arch flares, an M sports steering wheel, leather gear knob, and a larger toolkit. With a factory output of 215hp, the 3.4-litre M30 straight six could propel the 535i from zero to sixty in little over seven seconds, and on to 139mph!

Exterior

This stunning Diamantschwarz E28 is the cleanest we’ve seen; it’s completely rust-free and is arrow-straight down both flanks. Freshly detailed, the dark metallic paintwork has a lustful shine and is almost without fault other than a couple of tiny stone chips and a small lacquer imperfection by the fuel filler. Looking closer, all the brightwork is very clean and original, and the plastic and rubber trims unfaded and without damage. The underside is also extremely well preserved and has never required any welding repairs.

Interior

It’s a very special interior with the desirable body-hugging sports seats, dogleg manual gearbox and leather trimmed M-Tech steering wheel. Everything presents extremely well with no cracks on the dash, immaculate seat bolsters, and no fading to any of the upholstery. It’s lovely to see the original BMW mats in such fine condition, and another great feature is the period-style Blaupunkt stereo with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The boot area is just as clean and everything works including all windows, the sunroof, and central locking.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Out on the open road this low mileage 535i is a joy to drive with plenty of power and low down grunt. At great expense she has been fitted with a dogleg gearbox and LSD to complete all the analogue driver’s requirements. Reading through the accompanying paperwork there are invoices for lots of recent mechanical expenditure including for the fully recommissioned M535i gearbox, limited-slip diff, and brand new BMW clutch.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Really finishing the car off are genuine 16-inch BBS cross-spoke M5 alloy wheels with almost new matching Pirelli tyres. These were all purchased from BMW and remain in perfect condition. Brake-wise, the calipers have recently been overhauled and fitted with new pads.

History File

This stunning 535i was first registered in April 1986. The History File is full with chunky recent invoices from getting the car into tip-top mechanical condition. Recent work includes fitting a fully refurbished M535i manual gearbox, LSD, overhauled calipers, and a new clutch. The last service and health check were carried out by our trusted BMW specialist in April 2023. The file also contains lots of older invoices and some MOT certificates. The original service book is lost but there are copies of some of the early stamps.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
