BMW 750 750iL 2000

General description : Model History

Introduced in 1994, the E38 7-Series took over the throne from the E32. Rather than being a revolutionary new car, it took what had been learned from the E32 and refined it. The result was a large executive saloon that was incredibly handsome, spacious and thanks to BMW’s 50/50 weight distribution, an absolute riot to drive. It was also a car of firsts. The E38 was the first car to be fitted with curtain airbags, it was the first European car to be offered with satellite navigation and it was the first BMW to be offered with an in-built television.

Engine-wise, the E38 was available with a straight-six, a V8 or a V12. For some markets it was also built with a range of diesel engines, though here in the UK we didn’t get those. We also didn’t get the rare manual-transmission cars – we only had the 5-speed automatic, but to be honest, in a car of such heft, automatic is the way to go.

For many, the E38 was 7-Series perfection. The design was, and still is, seen as being one of the best ever. So smitten were buyers with the E38, when the E65 successor was announced, sales of the E38 went up, as did values. Over its life, the E38 has also become a bit of a pop-culture icon, with starring roles in films like James Bond and The Transporter.

Exterior

With its elegant, carefully considered lines it’s easy to see why the E38 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of 7-Series design. This particular example looks fantastic in Cosmos Black Metallic, the dark paintwork perfectly offset by a generous helping of gleaming chrome trim to the bumpers, window surrounds, and kidney grille. The body presents in excellent condition with a deep shine and uniform colour all round, the only real negatives to report being some light frontal stone chips and a handful of discreetly touched-in marks. The brightwork remains in equally fine order, and there are no scuffs or scrapes to any of the plastic bumper inserts.

Interior

The sumptuous E38 interior is awash with soft Montana leather and enough creature comforts to rival even the most modern luxury saloons. The upholstery is still notably supple, and a deep factory texture can be felt throughout. The seats are all heated and electrically-adjustable, including at the rear where passengers are additionally treated to plentiful legroom, fold-down tray tables, and separate climatic AC; for optimal comfort the passenger-side front seat can also be adjusted via controls in the rear armrest.

The cabin is laced with glossy walnut inlays and subtle Chrome Line trim accenting the gearshift and door speakers, etc. Looking closer, commonly worn items such as the multifunction M steering wheel and satnav screen retain a superb factory-fresh appearance, and in the footwells the pale carpets are still well protected by a full set of original BMW overmats. The AC is also blowing icy cold following a recent re-gas.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is exceptionally well presented with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair to speak of. The 5.4-litre M73 V12 really is the pick of the bunch, offering effortless silky-smooth driving while still packing a punch when you need to get a shift on. The 5-speed automatic gearbox is a perfect match for the 750iL with almost undetectable gear changes. All in all, a real driving treat.

This superb example is hardly run in with only 51k miles on the clock. The last service was carried out in January 2021, and since arriving with us the car has been fully inspected for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The E38 sits on its original 18-inch multi-spoke alloys, all in excellent condition. They are shod in a matching set of Dunlop tyres, each with ample tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This highly specified, low mileage V12 E38 was first registered in October 2000. It has now driven just 51k miles in the hands of only 3 registered keepers. The History File is complete with a raft of maintenance invoices, past MOT certificates, and a set of spare keys. The service booklet has unfortunately been mislaid, however the selection of invoices and printouts from BMW within the accompanying documentation show the car to have been well maintained. The last service was carried in January 2021 at 50,850 miles. Most recently, the car has just returned from a full mechanical inspection, the only items requiring attention being a worn steering idler and the air conditioning not blowing fully cold, both of which have now been rectified.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
