Exterior

Presented in coat of lustrous Black, this low mileage 840Ci Sport looks very sharp against our studio backdrop although our photos don’t do it enough justice. Having just been treated to a full detail and machine polish the paintwork maintains a deep glossy shine with no unsightly swirl marks to report. The car is lovely and straight along both sides and, having clearly been garaged when not in use, there is no corrosion to be found in any of the common E31 weak spots. In line with the mileage there is an honest dusting of light frontal stone chips but certainly nothing to detract from the car’s overall highly impressive finish. The underside is also remarkably tidy having previously benefitted from a professional Dinotrol underseal and cavity wax to further preserve its amazing condition.

Interior

The interior of the 840 is awash with supple grey Nappa leather. The upholstery has worn really well with no damage or major wear to speak of, even to the driver’s bolster, which in this case hints at only light use. Glancing across the dash, the M-stitched leather steering wheel remains in excellent condition, and the console switchgear is also remarkably unworn. The rear seats appear to have seen little use, and the footwell carpets are still protected by the original velour overmats. At the rear of the car the spacious boot area is clean and tidy, neatly housing the CD changer, toolkit, and spare wheel beneath the carpet.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 4.4-litre V8 delivers 282hp and gives the 840Ci a 0-60mph time of just 6.8 seconds. Considering its large size and hefty power output, the M62 engine is surprisingly economical given its 2.81:1 final drive ratio; at 70mph the engine turns over at a lazy 2,200rpm. The under-bonnet area of this particular example presents exceptionally well, perfectly in line with the low mileage of 56k.

Reading through the accompanying history file it’s clear this one has always been well maintained. There are 14 service stamps in the original booklet and the last service was carried out by a well-regarded BMW specialist in June 2022 at 56,481 miles. The car further benefits from a bespoke stainless steel exhaust which sounds fantastic and certainly adds to the sense of occasion out on the open road.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The factory optional two-piece alloys all present extremely well with absolutely no curb marking to the polished outer rims. They are shod in matching Falken tyres with ample tread left at each corner. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, effortlessly bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This attractive 840Ci in desirable Sport guise was first registered in June 1997. It has now driven just 56k miles from new in the hands of only 5 registered keepers (the current since 2015). The accompanying History File is complete with the original BMW document pack, owner’s manuals, stamped service booklet, a raft of maintenance invoices, MOT certificates, and the spare key. A cosseted example in excellent condition throughout, ready to be driven and enjoyed.

About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
