General History

Alfa Romeo, among the most dynamic and mechanically advanced automobile companies, began as a specialty constructor with little interest in volume manufacturing. After the second world war, Alfa advanced from their cumbersome hand crafting processes and complex fabrication that yielded beautiful but limited production cars. With the war done and new technology advancing quickly, the Giulia and Giulietta entered the marketplace. Positioned as affordable, stylish cars, a youthful and enthusiastic public welcomed the new Alfas. The new models were small, sporty, fashionable, and finely trimmed, delivering an air of sophistication that young men and women craved in the fast-growing post-war boom years. Both cars enjoyed success, with strong sales in Europe and America. The twin cam in-line four-cylinder engine, synchromesh gearbox, and excellent suspension offered spirited driving coupled with elegant styling. Sales volumes advanced Alfa-Romeo into becoming one of the largest manufacturers not just in Italy but all over the world.

Current Condition and Ownership History

Having benefited from restoration performed under prior ownership by a Canadian Alfa Romeo enthusiast, the former owner was careful with the car reporting that it was a clean original example with no significant rust, no damage and that he had added approximately 1000 kms to the car under his ownership. The car remained with the Canadian owner until the cloth interior sustained damage while in storage.
In 2018, the car was sold to the current owner who, by 2020, had commissioned a fresh restoration beginning by removing the damaged interior. While the interior was out, all trim was removed, the paint was stripped, and the car was repainted in the current shade of blue, which is reportedly original to the car. The new interior was retrimmed in grey with leather seating surfaces. New headliner and carpets were also installed although the door cards and rear storage area were retained and are reportedly original to the car. In addition to the interior work, additional mechanical work was also performed by selected specialist vendors including an engine rebuild, suspension and brake work, and selected trim refinished as needed.
The engine rebuild included a complete tear down to the bare block. After inspection, the block was deemed in excellent condition and not in need of a rebore, so it was honed, new bearings and piston rings were installed, existing pistons and connecting rods were cleaned and reconditioned, the crankshaft was reground, the head cleaned and resurfaced, and the flywheel also cleaned and resurfaced. New timing components were installed including a new timing chain, and a new water pump. The entire assembly was pressure tested before the installation and has since returned to the shop for a general overview.

Cosmetic Overview

Today this Alfa presents in a very nice driver+ level condition with consistent finishes overall and endearing presentation. The paint is in very good condition with consistent smooth coverage and good gloss, delivering a pleasant finish just right for enjoyable use and local Alfa Club gatherings. The hood and trunk display very good fit opening and closing properly, though the driver’s side door shuts slightly proud in the lower corner of the trailing edge. The glass is in very good condition with no significant scratches or chips. Much of the chrome trim is excellent overall, as well as very nice taillight lenses and front turn indicators. Even the door handles, often pitted, are in very nice condition. A pair of original matching Carello headlights are installed, the beautiful grille is fitted with new gasket material, and the side openings are very nicely finished with polished trim. The wheels are correctly finished with silver paint which show minor signs of age, capped by polished hubcaps and lightly aged Alfa Romeo center caps that are in good condition. Currently fitted with a set of Vredestein 155 SR15 tires displaying minimal wear, the stance is excellent, and the wheel and tire combination nest nicely underneath the Bertone wheel arches.

The interior is finished with grey leather seating surfaces, matching grey vinyl seatbacks, matching grey carpet, a new headliner, and a beautifully finished dashboard. The grey leather seats have been finished with the correct seat patterns and piping lines and are consistent with the matching vinyl door panels. The carpeting is essentially new, protected by an embossed black and grey rubber mat. The dashboard is very nicely finished with matching blue paint for the main panel and a blue padded top with light grey material stitched to the bottom of the dash. The gauges are in excellent condition including high contrast dial faces and crisp numeric details. The chrome trim on the interior is very nicely finished, including the original stamped and etched door sills, a handsome black steering wheel with aluminum spokes and central Alfa Romeo branded hub, a Bertone branded radio blanking plate, and vintage seat belts. Finishes inside the trunk appear to be largely original to the car including the inner black paint, fuel filler, trunk mounted battery, and jacking tool mounted to the back wall of the trunk compartment.

Under the hood, the engine compartment is consistent and well-presented combining older restoration and more recently finished details. The twin-cam cover is nicely finished, while the engine is correctly fitted with a factory black air cleaner assembly feeding the single Solex carburetor via twin air hoses. Engine components and surrounding engine compartment features are all clean and representative of proper care and enjoyable use. Hoses, wires, and other soft items have been more recently replaced and the engine operation confirms that much of the mechanical systems and fluids have been thoughtfully tended to. Overall, the engine and engine compartment further reflect the honesty and integrity of a largely original 1600 with correct features and components thoughtfully freshened. The underside of the car presents as original revealing a refreshingly original and sound chassis, newer axle limit straps, newer exhaust, Koni shock absorbers, and new springs. The alloy castings are in excellent condition and there are no visual signs of structural compromise to the chassis or suspension mounting points. Inner rocker panels and jack points all appear original and in very good condition.
