Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport 1988

General description : A wonderful German-supplied 3.2 Carrera Sport, G50 gearbox, 133k miles.

MODEL HISTORY

Instantly recognizable, the 911 design can be traced back the original sketches drawn by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche in 1959. The first Porsche 911 'classic' was developed as a more powerful, larger, comfortable replacement for the company's first model, the Porsche 356. Originally named the Porsche 901 but quickly changed as Peugeot protested holding the exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. Porsche decided instead of selling the new model with an alternative name in France, they simply changed the name to 911. Since 1964 the 911 model proved to be a huge success, with models such as the Carrera RS, 911 Carrera 2.7, 911 SC and the 911 Turbo.

1984 saw the launch of the 911 Carrera 3.2, which was a replacement for the successful SC series. The 3.2 Carrera revived the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. It utilised a new higher-displacement 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat-6 engine, which used higher domed pistons to increase the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1. It was also fitted with a new inlet manifold and exhaust system, Bosch Motronic management system and Bosch LE-Jetronic system. Stronger Hydraulic tensioners for the cam chains were also replaced. In 1987, the Carrera received a new five-speed G50 gearbox sourced from Getrag, with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. From October 1986, changes in the fuel map and chip re-programming further helped improve the power from 207 to 217hp.

Three Carrera models were available at the time, the Coupe, Targa, and Cabriolet. Almost identical in design to the earlier SC model, the Carrera received subtle cosmetic changes throughout its lifespan. Some of the more noticeable changes were the integrated front fog lights and redesigned dashboard featuring larger air conditioning vents.

Porsche went on to produce various editions of the 3.2 Carrera series including the Supersport, Clubsport, Silver Anniversary, and the Speedster.

Equipment

Fuchs forged alloy wheels, Front and rear spoilers, Electric sports seats in Porsche Logo cloth, Sports shock absorbers, Electric windows, Sony cassette player, Immobiliser, Lockable glovebox, Front and rear speakers, Cigarette lighter, Electric mirrors, Heated rear screen, Folding rear seats, Front strut brace, Space saver spare wheel, Jack, Spare key.

EXTERIOR

Guards red with black cloth interior is a classic, desirable colour combination for an air-cooled Porsche of this era. On close inspection the paintwork is in good presentable condition for a car of this vintage, with a deep glossy shine. The black trim around the vehicle is also in good order with no damage to be found to the front or rear bumpers. Being the Sport variant, this example comes equipped with sports dampers, sports seats, as well as the legendary whale tail rear wing and front lip spoiler.

INTERIOR

The electrically adjustable sports seats were a factory option as part of the ‘sport pack'. The cloth centre is upholstered with ‘Porsche' logo material, all of which is in good order with no sagging or damage, as are the bolsters of both front seats. The folding rear seats are also in good condition with no damage. The interior space has a lovely aged patina to it without ever feeling tired. Despite the mileage the interior remains in good condition throughout. The only non-original item to be found is a Sony Cassette player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This Carrera is in fine mechanical fettle, which is immediately evident after a short drive. Everything feels tight and responsive with good power delivery and sharp handling. Since 2009 this example has been solely maintained by marque specialist Chris Turner. The most recent service was carried out less than 1k miles ago at 133,377 miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Carrera Sport sits on a set of 16-inch Fuchs forged alloy wheels, finished in silver with matte black centres. On close inspection there are a couple of light marks to note but nothing to detract from the overall good condition. The wheels are shod in a set of Continental tyres, all with ample tread remaining. All discs and pads were replaced 10k miles ago.

HISTORY FILE

First registered in September 1988 in Germany and supplied to its first owner Mr Hans-Gunter. The car remained in Germany until July ‘98 after which it was imported into the UK. Since that time it has had just four keepers in the UK with three previous keepers in Germany.

Within the history file is a Porsche driver's manual, UK and German registration documents, MOT certificates dating back to 1998, along with a stack of invoices for various parts and work carried out over the years.
